In part 1 of this series we set the stage for the final climactic showdown between Rome and Carthage. This involves a recap of the preceding First Punic War and Second Punic War which had ultimately seen the Romans emerge victorious. We then see how both sides navigated their way through the following interbellum years. For Carthage this largely meant upheavals at home as it attempted to stave off internal and external pressures. For Rome meanwhile this largely meant a continuation of its campaigns to dominate the Mediterranean.

We then take a closer look at the spark of war which was ignited by the opportunistic attacks of the Numidian King Massinissa against his neighbor. In such matters, Rome refused to play the impartial arbiter. Such a situation proved untenable for Carthage which was eventually forced to take matters into its own hands to defend itself. However this would have grave consequences when the Roman Senate not leapt at the opportunity to declare war. A showdown a monumental proportions looms on the horizon.

Stay tuned as we prepare to cover the siege of Carthage in full detail.
