This episode of China Uncensored covers recent political purges under Xi Jinping, escalating maritime tensions between China and the Philippines, and the CCP's expanding legal reach over overseas citizens. It also discusses China's strategic move to replace Nvidia chips with domestic AI infrastructure and critiques pro-CCP narratives pushed by elites and tech platforms.
Xi Jinping purges a top nuclear official.
China's bullying in the South China Sea
steps up a notch.
And China says it can arrest anyone,
anywhere in the world.
That and more on this week's China news headlines.
Welcome to China Uncensored.
I'm Chris Chappell.
Purge!
And also hi.
This time on the people's favorite communist soap opera,
General Hostility.
Xi Jinping is out for blood.
He's getting more paranoid every day.
And this week, he's purged yet another top official,
Bian Zhigang.
Bian became deputy head of China's defense industry
just two years ago.
Now, Xi Jinping's anti-corruption watchdog
is investigating him for, quote,
violations of party discipline.
What did Bian really do?
Is it connected to the space program
or nuclear weapons research he oversaw?
Stay tuned for more General Hostility.
Well, that was fun.
Not for the guy who got purged, obviously.
That was about as fun as getting your teeth pulled,
which might happen to him.
But Xi Jinping's recent purges
across the Chinese military
don't seem to be slowing it down.
This week, China and the Philippines
had a rare naval standoff
near the disputed Scarborough Shoal,
which is here, close to the Philippines,
and very far from China.
China sent four warships
to confront a Philippine naval vessel.
Why was China so aggressive?
Besides, you know, being China.
Was it in response to the
Balikatan joint military exercises
the Philippines just held with the US
and five other allied nations,
where they prepared to defend themselves
in the coming war with China?
Was it because the Philippines asked them
to remove this, quote unquote,
temporary research facility from the island?
Nope.
The CCP sent four naval warships
because they were protecting the turtles.
No wonder Mitch McConnell loves them so much.
Yes, you see, by total coincidence last week,
Chinese researchers had just discovered
a large gathering of endangered sea turtles
on Huangyang Island,
which is what China calls the Scarborough Shoal.
And like all the other endangered minorities
in territories the CCP claims,
the CCP needs to protect them
by taking over their territory.
TBD if we're going to wind up
seeing turtle labor camps.
I mean, re-education centers.
So that was the pretext for China
sending four, yes, four warships
to the Scarborough Shoal,
meaning they care more about the environment
than Greta Thunberg.
Get off your flotilla
and get an armada for the environment, Greta.
The Philippines responded with
the Diego Silang frigate,
which was on patrol in the area.
Philippine media showed footage
of both sides radioing each other,
telling each other,
this is our territory, get out.
The Philippines then launched a helicopter
to show they meant business.
And after that, the incident fizzled out
with any further conflict.
But rest assured, China will be back.
If only to protect the minorities,
those delicious, delicious minorities.
Just kidding, it's not that grim.
Well, not usually.
China just wants to occupy the Scarborough Shoal
so it can build another military base
right off the coast of the Philippines.
They won't be happy until, like Hong Kong,
the Philippines are just a shell
of their former selves.
But if the CCP is unable to claim
other countries' territory,
it has a backup plan.
It will claim rights over the people
in other countries' territory.
It sounds like a joke,
but it's already begun.
China says it has a right
to target people overseas
with its new Ethnic Unity Law
that goes into effect on July 1st.
China's law says that people
anywhere in the world
can be held legally accountable
for undermining ethnic unity and progress
or inciting ethnic separatism.
What this means is,
let's take for example
Hong Kong activist Nathan Law,
who I interviewed a few years ago.
He wants freedom for people in Hong Kong.
The CCP considers that inciting separatism,
even though he's not actually calling
for Hong Kong independence.
But hey, their feelings don't care about facts.
Nathan Law lives in the UK now,
where he has asylum.
So while the CCP can't actually
arrest him on UK soil,
under this new law,
they can arrest him if they ever
manage to get him to China.
Which would make for some
extra targeted advertising.
And just because Nathan Law lives in the UK,
that doesn't mean he's necessarily safe.
Rights groups have also complained
that China has tried to use
Interpol Red Notices
to try and get foreign governments
to arrest people abroad.
Under this new law,
the CCP can also arrest anyone
who helps Nathan Law.
Like, for example,
the handsome guy who interviewed him.
And the CCP is getting pretty serious
about expanding its global enforcement.
A UK border official and a former Hong Kong cop,
both ethnically Chinese,
have been sentenced for spying
on China's behalf in the UK.
The CCP had them conducting surveillance
on Chinese people living abroad,
including former Hong Kong lawmaker Nathan Law
and other activists they refer to as cockroaches.
Which is actually a compliment,
if you think about it.
Because it means that no matter
how hard the CCP tries to squash them,
they keep fighting.
Go cockroaches!
I don't have cockroaches in my house
because I'm a slob,
it's because I'm an ally.
As for the bad people,
Bill Yuen and Peter Wai,
the UK has sentenced them
to 8 to 10 years in prison.
Which, honestly, is not very harsh at all.
Prison in the UK is like a luxury spa
compared to what Nathan Law would face
if they got him to a prison in China.
That'd be like pulling teeth,
probably literally.
Remember how Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang
has been trying to sell more advanced chips to China?
And how he's lobbied the Trump administration
to make that happen?
Well, as anyone with a middle school level
skill of pattern recognition could have told him,
it was always going to turn out badly.
And now it has.
China's planning the world's largest
single AI infrastructure project in history,
a massive AI data center grid
at a cost of 295 billion dollars.
And they've just locked Nvidia out
by requiring that the vast majority of chips
be domestically produced in China.
So in other words,
Nvidia sold chips in China,
China learned how to make them,
and then started producing chips on its own.
Huang pleaded to be allowed to sell
even more advanced chips in China,
and China knocked those off too.
Then China threw Nvidia under the bus
that they probably learned how to build
from some bus company they screwed over.
Because China's plan effectively writes Nvidia
out of the largest new computing procurement in the world.
Nvidia shares fell 2.4% after that was reported.
I know Jensen Huang is probably shocked
that the CCP is so ungrateful for his help.
It's amazing how smart people can be
so stupid when it comes to China.
For the record,
I've been warning Jensen Huang about this for a long time,
but I don't think he watches China Uncensored.
Speaking of smart people who are stupid
when it comes to China,
American billionaire Ray Dalio.
He's one of those guys who has traveled to China
dozens of times over the decades,
and wants to tell you that he's a real China expert.
Which he is.
The way someone who only eats at McDonald's
is a real hamburger expert.
And now, after a recent 10-day trip to China,
he's pushing the idea that America doesn't have what it takes
to fight to maintain its empire.
And that China is on the rise.
And that we should all just capitulate to the CCP
because they're the future.
Aged wagyu burgers just don't have what it takes
to stand up to the deliciousness of Big Mac's grey beef.
Ray Dalio has been hoodwinked by the CCP.
He's being incredibly stupid.
But he can't see it,
because the CCP rolls out the red carpet for him.
And because he's so prominent,
his stupid ideas on China are going to influence
a lot of politicians and business people
to make the wrong choices.
I'm working on an episode now about how rich elites
keep jumping on the bandwagon of stupid pro-CCP ideas like this,
and how that's going to screw over the average American.
People like you.
So stay tuned for my episode that comes out on Monday.
Until then, play off the Mickey D's.
But honestly,
YouTube probably doesn't want you watching that episode.
Because Google, which owns YouTube,
makes billions of dollars from Chinese ad sales.
And YouTube is constantly pushing videos
that promote the CCP's narrative—
that modern China is clean, safe, and very, very high tech.
But those YouTubers are only giving the tour
the CCP planned for them,
and Chinese companies often cover their travel expenses.
That's like thinking Jared Fogle is a great guy
after only seeing his Subway commercials.
Well, me and the China Uncensored team are working every day
to bring you the news the Chinese Communist Party tries to censor.
The CCP is against us.
Big tech is against us.
