Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe video follows a couple building an off-grid home in the Arizona desert. After completing the floor tiles, the focus shifts to the walls, involving the application of a clay slip and cob. Despite challenges with weather and accidental messes on the newly finished floors, the project progresses toward filling out the wall structures.
This week on OSRL. It's cobbin time.
Uh Jess I got some good news and some bad news. I can't imagine Jess being too happy about this.
How's it going everyone and welcome back to the domestead. Now if you're new here, Jess and I
we're building our own home off-grid here in the Arizona desert. And if you could do us a big favor
like this video and please subscribe if you haven't so you can see how all of this comes together.
That's right now if you've seen our last video you know we put the finishing touches on our floor.
Well we brought everything up to level. We got the tiles in place. It looks fantastic. But now it's
going to take a while to dry. But while it's drying we're not just going to wait around and just watch
for it to dry right. We got a lot of things to do. We got to keep busy. So what are we doing?
I think it's time to start on the walls. I know it's time to start on the walls. So I'm going to
get started on that. We're going to get some mud on these walls. Get some cob in place. And I think
these walls are going to start really taking shape. All right I'm ready to get started. You ready to
get started? Let's get to work. All right so I'm going to start working on the walls here. Obviously
we got these bare bales and we don't want these bare bales for any longer than we need them.
Before I get any cob on here I need to get that clay slip on here so everything
just kind of sticks to these bales. So that's what I'm going to be starting on. And I'm going
to try and get this whole room done with that clay slip before getting a cob in place. That's
what I'm going to be working on. What are you working on? Looks like you're doing some really
detailed work here. Kind of cleaning up the routed areas a little bit and starting to clean
up the tiles. I know like you're going to be doing more mud work so the floor might get muddy again
but you're going to clean it anyway. Well I'm starting to. Well you got one done. That looks
fantastic. Yeah look at the difference. Look at the difference.
Well that you certainly made a difference there. That tile looks great. Okay yeah so while Jess is
cleaning the tiles I'm going to get busy on making them dirty again. So let's get started.
All right so this is my first mix of the clay slip and I kind of got it toward like I'm trying
to get into like a pudding consistency. So I can I think the way I best did this before is to just
kind of get in there with my hands and just kind of work it into the the bales. I feel like that
was the best way for me personally. But other people might have quicker or more preferred methods
but I just like to get my hands dirty. You know what I mean? Looks like Jess is making a lot of
progress on. She's got another square done. She's moving along pretty quick. So I got to move along
quicker so I can muddy these things up. All right I got my mud. I'm just going to work this into the
bales. So Jess is wondering why my mix is chunky and I use unsifted material in here. So yeah there's
going to be some rocks. There might even be some chunky areas of dirt. So any of the rocks that I
end up coming across I'm just going to discard. And I chose to do this because I just I didn't
want to use up all of our sifted material because that that stuff's pretty important. Once I get
those rocks I can just dump them into the bales here. That's quickly becoming clear to me. I'm
going to have to use sifted stuff because this is becoming a problem. I'll just have to sift the dirt.
Good morning. All right well I made some good progress yesterday. I got about half of this
room done so time to knock out the other half of this room today. And uh you know I got a late
start yesterday because we had some business to do in the morning. But uh so I think I can get the
rest of this room done and hopefully start on the next phase of these walls. So I'm really excited.
I'm prepping to do the last layer of the clay slip on these bales. One more mix to go. And I
noticed man the clouds have rolled in, the winds have really picked up, and man it seems like a
storm could be coming. But uh I don't expect rain today but uh I think tomorrow we could get some
rain. So maybe maybe things are just gearing up for tomorrow or uh maybe we'll get some rain today.
But uh pretty wild. One more mix to go and then uh we got that clay slip all ready to go.
Look at this. Look at this. So now that I got my clay slip on everything's looking real good. I got
it all over the walls. All over the floor too by the way. I can't imagine just being too happy about
this. I'm gonna stop it here, switch gears, and I'm gonna start working on these lower portions of
the walls getting these set. But man the wind is howling out there. Man we got winds at least 30
miles an hour. Probably higher with the gusts. So it is crazy windy out there. So we could get some
rain tonight and all through the night and possibly tomorrow morning. So could get a little wet out
here. We'll see how it goes. Nothing gets in the way. We're gonna start on the lower half of these walls.
Very excited. Moving right along. Oh so we got that rain. That rain did come and we got enough rain
to uh fill up the poly tanks again. Look at that. We got that overflow going. So that's very exciting
to see. Uh let's check and see how much we got. Yeah just uh oh wow. About a three-eighths of an inch.
Almost half an inch. Not bad at all. I'm gonna not, I'm not gonna dump that out because we might
get some more rain throughout the day. So we'll see maybe we'll reach a half an inch.
Going for a little walk on this chilly rainy day. How are you feeling today? Oh a little sluggish.
Cloudy rainy days are not your, they're not for you. No I'm glad we got some rain.
Oh yeah. Poly tanks are full again. I didn't tell you how much rain do you think we got?
What's your guess? Quarter inch. A little more. Three-eighths of an inch.
Is it harvest time? All right so it's cloudy, kind of cold, but uh the work has to continue. So
I'm gonna be starting with, now that I got the clay slip down, I'm gonna be starting with cob
and I'm probably gonna get about two feet worth of height on this cob and just get that
along the inside of these walls to kind of fill that wall out and then then we'll come the next
step. But cob first. So let's get that in place. Sun's going down. I think we're pretty safe.
Now we're not going to get any more rain. We're getting a little bit of rain like pretty much
all day today. So let's see what the final tally is. A full three-eighths of an inch.
Poly tanks are full. IVC totes have more water in it. So an excellent day for sure.
All right so I got my mud clothes on and I'm ready to get back to work. Trying to get a good
base layer all the way around here. About a foot and a half to two feet maybe. And that'll be a
good start as I keep working my way up. But uh yeah I'm ready to get to it. Let's get to mudding y'all.
It's cobbing time. Uh I just requested you to come. Well I only made one request. She goes
where I go. Uh Jess I got some good news and some bad news. Good news is I feel like I made
significant progress on the walls. The bad news is I really made a mess of your floors.
Yeah I feel like I just I didn't think about it. I should have put some kind of drop cloth.
Yeah well we can still do that. We can still do that. We'll get it a little get a clean
job in here and then put some drop cloth down. Yeah. Prevent any future catastrophes.
See this is exactly why people said hey why are you doing the floor now and before the walls.
Well I mean good thing is you know the tile is pretty easy to clean. It's pretty easy to clean.
We know what you think about the mess but what do you think about the walls?
I think you made good progress. It's looking good. That's a lot of progress right? Clay slip on all
the wall. Then I got about a quarter of the wall filled out. That's that's not insignificant. That's
a decent amount of work. Oh I'm tired. Yeah it was a lot of work and to think I did it all through
the wind and the rain and the drop in temperature just kept going. But things are about to heat up
and not just temperature wise but all the work wise too. So we are expected to get a heat wave.
Things are going to heat up pretty quick around here. What are those times supposed to be? In the
90s. Whoa yeah it's about to heat up. Work's about to heat up too. So I got about a quarter of that
wall filled out and I'm looking to get the rest of this filled out as well. I'm so excited to push
and you were going to do a test to see how dry the floor was but you held off.
And I think it's a wise decision with the rain and the humidity we had.
Like it's probably not gonna dry out that quick. It's looking pretty dry now. It looks pretty dry.
But yeah we gotta do some tests. So look forward to that next week. I'm gonna be building out this
wall. Maybe we'll get this wall filled out which is very exciting and we continue on with this
build. I'm very excited that this room is really coming along and it is about to get closed off
filled in. I'm very excited. We really appreciate you guys. Thank you so much for joining us on this
journey. We can't thank you enough. Check out one of these videos and we'll catch you on the next one.
Bye!
