The Restricted Neolithic Site Guarded by the Turkish Military – Çakmaktepe

Almost nobody visits this 12,000-year-old site — because it’s off-limits to the public and guarded by the Military!

Çakmaktepe is one of the earliest Neolithic sites in the Taş Tepeler region of southeastern Turkey. While other sites in the area have become better known, this location remains heavily restricted. Very few people have ever been allowed inside.

In this video, I explore what archaeologists have uncovered here: around 50 circular houses carved directly into the bedrock, a large 16-metre communal building, and one of the most striking discoveries so far — a structure containing dozens of deliberately placed gazelle skulls. These findings offer rare insight into how early hunter-gatherer communities began to settle and create ritual spaces more than 12,000 years ago.
Because access is so limited, this site has remained largely hidden from public view. What’s being found here could help us understand the very earliest stages of human settlement in this region.
