The Landsee Castle ruins are located in central Burgenland, east of the village of Landsee in the municipality of Markt Sankt Martin in the Oberpullendorf district. They are among the largest castle ruins in Central Europe. Landsee was situated just a few hundred meters east of the border between the Austrian territories of the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. The Styrian charter book mentions an Erchenger von Landesehre in 1173, whose family also owned Hohenwang Castle near Langenwang. After two devastating fires in 1707 and 1790, the castle began to decay. In 1802, the site was described as "ruinous." It subsequently served as a quarry for building materials in the surrounding area. Since 1968, the castle ruins have been secured and made accessible to the public.
