The Story of Huang Xiang (Hoàng Hương)
A Devoted Son

Huang Xiang was a native of Jiangxia during the Eastern Han Dynasty. From a very young age, he was exceptionally filial and devoted to his parents, earning him the nickname "the little filial son" from the local villagers. When Huang Xiang was only nine years old, his mother passed away, which drove him to show even greater devotion to his father. Every day, he took on the heavier household chores so that his father could have more time to rest. He constantly looked for ways to make his father's life more comfortable.
Summer and Winter Care

During the sweltering heat of summer, when mosquitoes were rampant, Huang Xiang knew his father could not bear the heat and often struggled to sleep while being bitten. Therefore, every evening before his father went to bed, Huang Xiang would use a fan to cool down the pillow and mat while chasing away the mosquitoes. Only then would he invite his father to sleep. In the freezing winter, fearing his father would catch a cold, Huang Xiang would lie in the bed first to warm up the sheets and blankets with his own body heat before asking his father to rest.
Renowned Throughout the Land

Before long, stories of Huang Xiang's filial acts spread throughout the capital until they became common knowledge to everyone. At that time, a popular saying emerged to praise him: "Matchless under heaven, Jiangxia’s boy Huang." This meant that in terms of filial piety, there was likely no one else in the world who could rival Huang Xiang of Jiangxia Prefecture. Upon hearing this, the Governor of Jiangxia felt it was an extraordinary virtue, so he submitted a petition to the Emperor to officially commend Huang Xiang's filial behavior.

Later generations composed a poem of deep respect to praise him:

"Warming the blankets in winter's chill, fanning the pillow in summer's heat; so young yet fully understanding a child's duty, throughout history, there is only Huang Xiang."
