In today's lesson, we're working with two brothers who couldn't be more different in the water.
One is confident, independent, and ready to explore. The other needs a little more encouragement, guidance, and reassurance. As swim instructors, understanding how to adapt our teaching style to each child's personality is one of the most important skills we can develop.
Every child learns differently. Even siblings.
Whether you're a parent, swim instructor, or swim school owner, this lesson provides valuable insight into how we adjust our approach based on each child's needs while keeping lessons fun, engaging, and productive.

Good job Eddie. You go back Jimmy. There you go over to the stairs.
Working with two brothers today. We got Eddie and Jimmy. Completely different levels. I typically
only teach Eddie in this spot. I got Jimmy here today hanging out. Jimmy can already kind of swim
you know. He's decent. He can roll to his float and when he wants to that is and so on and so
I let Jimmy kind of mess around while I work with Eddie. He just requires a little pushing. So while
I'm teaching Eddie, I'm just also watch over Jimmy. It's good for the two brothers to be
able to pull together. His confidence definitely transfers over to Eddie and it's only going to
benefit both his kids when they're swimming. So if you are capable of taking two or at least
watching one might do the other. Come on let's go. Ready? I smell like chemicals 90% of the time.
I'm pretty sure I sweat chlorine. If that sounds familiar then you're probably a swim instructor

Let's start with our rings first Eddie. We gotta start with the rings first. Get the blue one.
Get blue and now we swim back. Doing good kicking. He's been doing kicks better when he's been
hanging out with Jimmy on Saturday. I think the confidence has just really carried over.
He's way, you know, he's, I notice he's a lot more excited and happy when he's
here. Eddie put it here. Put the donut away.
Very good. Good job. Are you ready? Come on. Can you come this way Eddie?
Come on Eddie. Can you come get this one? Come get it. Yeah, no dinosaur not yet.
I'll put that over there. Eddie, let's do all the rings and then we can play. Come on.
Got you. Come on Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. This way, this way, this way.
Gotta get the ring buddy. Come on. This one right here. Very good. Go back. Good job. Very good.
Can you put it right here? Jimmy, Eddie, can you put the ring away? Can you swim to my hand?
Good job. Using that hand target. Good boy. Come on go get pink. Come on. You see a dinosaur?
I'm gonna put it over here. Can you come get the pink one? Come on. Oh, you didn't put this one
away. Gotta put it away. Good job Eddie. Come on Eddie. Let's go get pink. All the way to pink.
You gotta come get it. Pink's my favorite. It's your favorite? Why? Because I love pink. Oh,
okay. Watch out. Watch out Jimmy. Wiggle your little way over there Eddie. Good job. Somebody's
crying. No, he's not crying. He's just talking. He's a baby. That's how he talks.
Can you put it away Eddie? Eddie's not a baby. He's a big boy. You're a bigger boy.
I want him to swim to my hand.
We're gonna build up that confidence having him swim out and then we're gonna work on
some rollovers on the next one. Good job. Good job. Grab on. Nope. Can you grab the clear one?
Very good. Then we go back to the stairs.
Swim. Come on. Let's see those lights activate.
Good job Eddie. Let's go this way Eddie.
Here Eddie. Put it away. No, no, no. We don't go up there. Turn the body. Look Eddie. Right there.
Put it right here Eddie. Put it away.
Very good. Put it on. Yeah, there you go. Very good. Good job. Okay, ready? Swim over here.
Eddie, come with me Eddie. Eddie, come with me. Let's go.
So again, he's got that hand under the water and then we'll guide him to that roll. Very good.
That's okay. We'll go one, two, three, four, and five. Wait for yourself a little bit.
Good. You get the blue one? Here, get this one. Okay, back over to the stairs Eddie.
Go to the stairs Eddie. Good job. Ready Jamie? Come do one swim with me Jamie. Eddie,
can you put the blue one away? Yeah. Good job. Roll him over. Good. Okay, but lay down for just
a second. Take a break. Get your breath. Okay, go to the wall. Very good. Swim over there.
Even though it's not, it's a lesson. Just keep them engaged.
Bubbles. Okay, Eddie's turn. Come on Eddie. Come on Eddie.
I thought he was going to come up on his own there. Not yet though. We're close. One, two.
So I got my hands on the tip of that head. He's got his hands off looking for me. I'm
going to put his hands on the back of his head. Still watching Jamie over there. Got a current
going. One, two, three, four, five. The pirate duck is right there. You want it? Here. There it
is. I threw it over there behind you. Go get it. Put it to the wall Eddie. Good job. Dinosaur.
Let's grab this one too. We'll put it on its neck. Whoa, he's got neck waves.
Swim. It's windy today. It's windy and rainy today, isn't it?
You want to grab some more toys? Yeah. Oh, let's go see what we got over there. Here,
put this away Eddie. Should I bring them over here? Should I bring them closer?
Bless you Eddie, bless you. I'll bring the toys over to you. Here you go. Now you can pick.
You can pick one. The teapot? Yeah. Okay, there you go. You can make some tea for us.
I love tea. You got your dinosaur. What kind of tea are you making?
What kind of tea are you making? You're making pink tea? I like tea. Come on Eddie.
Eddie, let's go get the, you got the ducky? Let's go get the next ring. You see the green one?
Come on Eddie. I want another toy. I'm going to grab that and guide him up into his roll.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
No, no, no. Good boy. Good job. Yeah, all right. So we got to get him using those arms a little
more. So we're going to turn him backwards. He's going to use that right arm. He's going to reach
around and that's what I want to see him do. No, you got to get the green one. Let's do it again.
Let's get the green one. Open those hands. Give him that cue. There's that right arm. He's using
it to turn. Here you go Eddie. Here you go Eddie. Good job Eddie. Good job Eddie. Back over to the
deck. He's moving his body much better than the first couple of times. Eddie,
you got to put that one away. What's up? What's up?
You mean you want Chip? Yeah.
I have Chip and Mrs. Teapot. Here you go.
All right, you stay on the stairs, okay Jimmy? Actually, never mind. I'm not going to go that
far away from him. Not a good idea. I was going to go to the other side and get something. Thank
you. Let's fill it up. I got to put it back in there. Or you want me to drink it? Yeah.
What kind of tea is it though? Pink. Pink tea? Like lemonade? Yeah.
I pretend drink it. I'm going to get Eddie some ground stew. Some what? Some ground tea.
Some grounded tea? Here's your tea Eddie. What about coffee? You got any coffee over there?
Yeah. What kind of coffee you got? I got ground. You got the grounded coffee? Espresso?
You got any espresso? I need the teapot to get it. Oh, you need the cup? Okay, come get it.
I got to get it. Come get it. Let's go swim. Who's going to get it first?
Me. Oh, he didn't get it. Oh no. Oh no, Eddie. Who's going to get it? Who's going to get it?
Eddie, you got to use your arms. You got to bring them closer.
Yeah, that's better. Good job. I got it. Which one you got? I got this one. You got that one?
Okay, let's go back over to the stairs. Swim with all of it. Swim all the way back. He's
looking for his feet. He's trying to put his feet in. You want to come up? Okay,
so he didn't make it. So I'm going to make him roll over. Good. Get your air. Okay, just take
breath. Good job. Come on. Hey, don't try to put your feet down. Use your hands. Swim. Hey,
you too, Eddie. Go. No, he put his feet down first. That's why you didn't make it the first
time. It's because you're putting your feet down first. When you swim over to the stairs,
you got to swim with hands first. Don't let them put their feet down. That's why that first one,
he fell right off the stairs. You'll be careful with this ball. Here you go.
What? Bubbles. Bubbles in water. How much tea? Two. Okay. Wait, I'm sorry. I accidentally poured
it out. Give me some more. What kind of tea is this? Pink. You keep making the same tea. I want
green. Green tea. Let me pour that one out. I want green tea. Green tea. I'm going to get the
fire tea. Fire tea? You want to put it on the burner? Yeah. Okay. Here's the red one. Remember
how we put it on top? Yeah. We can cook the tea. Yeah. Put it on top. Ready, Eddie? You want some
tea? Yeah. Yeah? Let's go swimming and then we'll get some tea. Hey, my hand's underwater. I want
him to grab it. I'm going to help him with that roll. That's how beautiful it is. My other hand's
on the tip of his head there. Now I'm creating a current. Now we're floating on its own. Now
we're taking him off. Great job. That was a beautiful job, buddy.
Baby. Oh, no. He's upset now. Now he's mad. That's his mad cry. You hear the baby crying? That's
he's upset. Why are you walking your baby? What? It's wet. My teeth fell. It's so cold.
His glasses are getting wet. That's okay. That's all right. Good job, Eddie. You have the ball?
I have the tea. You want to pick out some toys, Eddie?
Dinosaur. It's a red dinosaur. Red one. Buzz Lightyear. Buzz Lightyear to the rescue.
All right, boys. Hey, listen. We only have a couple more minutes, okay?
And that's it. Look, it's not raining right here because of my umbrella. I need some more umbrella.
I need to get something to cover the pool. You get a sun sail. That'd be cool.
That's what I definitely need. Oh, Jimmy's underwater. Good job. Hi, Jimmy.
Hello. Okay, Eddie. You go to the wall now, okay? We're going to put the ball on the wall.
Let's use those arms. Good turning. Good job using those hands. Using his whole body to twist.
He's using that right arm a little bit. Love it. Very good. Encouraging him to-
I'll put the tea back in. It's going to rain.
Not using them there, but that's okay. Good job. Bubbles. Bubbles.
Bubble. You want to do the music?
Good job, Eddie.
Careful, Jimmy. If you're going to teach two kids, you got to keep your eyes on both of them.
Come on.
It's raining. I won't make you do too much floating in the rain.
Since it's raining, we're just going to focus on getting a lot of arms.
Let's see if we can get him to- He's so used to turning that way. That's okay. Good job.
He used my arm as leverage, but he did it.
Rain, go away. Come again another day.
Let's see if he does it with the ball in his hands. Ready, set, go.
It's a little different. He's got that ball up in there. Here.
Interesting. Interesting. Now, let's leave it on the wall. Let me go get it. All right,
last one. Okay, let's see what you do this time. I'm going to go after Eddie.
Good. Uh-oh, there's water. No, it's close. Get back. I'm going to go after Eddie.
Big swallow. I'm going to go after Eddie. No, you're not going after Eddie today.
You're just hanging out in the pool. You go after Eddie on Saturday.
No. Yes.
Can't do it today. I got other students after Eddie. Hey, we're almost done, okay? I think
well, we are done, but we can spend an extra minute or two.
We're going to go do our jumps now, okay, Eddie? We're going to jump in.
That's okay. Do you want to jump in with us, Jimmy?
Oh, yeah.
Come over here. Crawl over here. Come this way.
Come on, Jimmy. This way.
Okay, sit down. You ready to jump?
Yeah.
Okay, we're going to do our jumps now. We're going to do the elbows. We got him in.
We want him to turn around. We've already been working on the turns.
Oh, I got my shirt wet.
My turn.
Your turn. Can you go by yourself? Go ahead.
Jimmy, don't leave your arm on the wall. Do it without your arm. Watch. Let me help you.
Watch. You put your hands in front. You do a little jump. You scooch,
and a little jump, and then turn. You go back to the wall. Your turn.
Good job, Jimmy. That was nice. Ready, Eddie? Ready, Eddie?
Okay, Eddie, come this way. You start turning. Good job. Very good. Very nice.
Okay, teach him to come in, turn, and always grab the wall. Ready? Last one.
Good job, Jimmy. Ready? Okay, Jimmy, your turn. Big jump.
Good. Turned underwater. Very nice. That's what I want to see.
Okay, you go get changed. Jimmy, you can hang out until he's ready.
Bye, Eddie.
No, no. All done. All done. No, no, no. All done. Bye-bye. Good work today. I see you next time,
okay?
Ready to go change him?
Yeah, change him. I'll play with Eddie until you're ready.
Okay, thank you.
You swim over there.
Wow.
So, when you're taking two kids, make sure you get one kid out of the water first,
so the parent, or the nanny, or whoever's here has time to change one kid and then the other.
It's just courtesy. We've got to help out the families that are bringing the kids,
so they want to continue to bring their students. Great job, buddy. So, listen,
if you're an instructor and you want to learn more things about teaching kids,
whether they're younger or older, teaching different levels at the same time,
you definitely want to check out our swim coach community where coaches like me and hundreds and
hundreds of other instructors all connecting, learning, and growing together. You can find
the link to that in the description below. And if you're a parent ready to teach your own child
to swim and you don't know how, we have courses just for you. You can find that in the description
below as well. I'll see you in the next superhero swim lesson.
