Hey guys, Franklin Camargo here. Welcome to A New Man on the Street.
Today, about one in four children in America grows up without a father.
In what I believe is one of the biggest challenges that the country faces.
So today we're in one of the most progressive cities in the country,
Los Angeles, to ask people, are fathers necessary?
Let's hear what they have to say.
Do you think fathers are necessary or could society replace that role?
I don't think that they're necessary for everybody.
Not really.
Not really? Why?
Because I don't have more muscle.
I'm glad I had a father. I'm sure I could have done great with perhaps two loving mothers.
I think everyone needs at least some sort of fatherly figure, even if it's not biological.
Being a girl, every girl needs her dad to love and to be loved and to know what love means.
So I think that's why fathers are important.
A hundred percent. And grandfathers too.
For me, I definitely couldn't imagine life without my father.
Do you think there is a fatherlessness issue in America?
Too many kids growing up without a father in the home.
It's definitely a pressing issue, but not everyone is suffering from it.
But I think it does lead to issues in a lot of maybe underdeveloped areas.
I don't know if it's happening too often, but if it is, it would definitely be a problem.
Because fathers, they play an important role.
A mother has a role that she should follow and a father has a role that he should follow.
I think that many that take a bad path in life really just needed a father figure
in their life or someone to guide them.
How do you feel as a kid growing up without a father?
I mean, it's tough, but my mom played both roles, so it's cool.
Have you noticed that maybe society is like, okay, you know what?
Fathers are not important.
I don't think specifically everyone needs a father,
but I think everyone needs a loving parent, two loving parents even better.
The society mainly says the mother is the most important,
but I think that both are equally important.
And they both complement each other, right?
Absolutely, they do complement.
If you had to guess, on average, how many kids like you grew up without a father in the home?
Probably like 70%.
Oh, maybe like 15, 10.
Oh, I don't know, like 25?
Oh, wow, yes.
It's actually 25%.
One in four children in America grew up without a father.
Among black Americans, it's higher.
It's 50%, but Americans overall, it's 25%.
Kids who grew up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty,
five times more likely to commit crime, nine times more likely to drop out of school,
20 times more likely to end up in prison.
Girls are four times more likely to get pregnant as teenagers.
So do you think fathers are necessary?
Oh, yeah.
For sure.
Yeah, absolutely.
What would you say to him for Father's Day?
Thanks, Dad.
Love ya.
Happy Father's Day.
You're the best.
I couldn't be living the life that I am today without him, and so I'm so grateful.
You're the best, Dad, ever.
Yes, fathers are necessary.
They are indispensable for any society that aspires to be safe, successful, and free.
