"Ave Maria" is one of Schubert's most popular works. It is the Latin name of the prayer Hail Mary.

While listening to Schubert's Ave Maria, one can feel the supplication and fervor of the prayer to the holy Mary. The lyrics reads: "When we sink down to sleep on this rock, and your protection covers us, the hard rock will seem soft to us. Miracles happen in faith, and the song sings about one of them.

The song is based on Walter Scotts poem "The Lady of the Lake" Here is Scotts' version of the lyrics:
