Russian troops who later fought in Ukraine and the EU's imposing new sanctions on Chinese
companies it says are helping support Russia's war effort. Here's what we know.
The European Union says China is playing a direct role in Russia's war against Ukraine.
Beijing remains a decisive enabler of Russia's war against Ukraine and in response we sanctioned
several Chinese entities today. We have also now verified reports that the Chinese military
has been training Russian military personnel to fight in Ukraine. We are carefully assessing
the implications. EU foreign policy chief Kayakalis making the remarks on Monday after
a meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg. Officials there approving a new package of
sanctions targeting Russia and its supporters. The sanctions include two Chinese companies
accused of supplying equipment linked to Russia's military-industrial complex.
Kayakalis' comments follow a Reuters investigation from last month. It cites European intelligence
agencies and documents that described a covert training program for Russian troops in China.
According to Reuters, the training focused heavily on drone operations and other battlefield skills.
Reuters reported that about 200 Russian troops were trained at military facilities in Beijing,
Nanjing and other locations. China is rejecting the allegations
and Russia has not directly responded to Kayakalis' latest remarks.
