Throughout history, men and women have chosen to withdraw from the world to seek a deeper meaning in their lives. For some, solitude is an ordeal. For others, it becomes a path to inner freedom, contemplation, and an encounter with the sacred.
In Nepal, two Buddhist monks embark on a three-year retreat in a remote Himalayan hermitage. In Ethiopia, Christian hermits have lived in churches clinging to cliffs for decades. In Canada, a man has made the forest his refuge, while a caretaker spends several months alone on a storm-battered island. Finally, freediving champion Guillaume Néry explores the ocean depths as an experience of communion with the living world.
