This Bengaluru Home is Built Around a Double-height Courtyard! (House Tour)
Set within a lush neighborhood in West Bengaluru, Vara is a 4,800 sq. ft. tropical modern home designed for a family of four. Named after the Sanskrit word for "blessing," the residence is conceived as a calm, light-filled sanctuary rooted in climate-responsive design.
At its heart lies a soaring double-height courtyard that draws daylight deep into the home while enabling natural ventilation through the stack effect. A sculptural floating concrete staircase rises through this volume, connecting a mezzanine library, family spaces, and private bedrooms that open toward views of the surrounding greenery.
Crafted with locally sourced natural materials—black leather-finish flooring, hollow clay brick walls, and exposed concrete ceilings—Vara celebrates authenticity and timelessness. Handcrafted details, including cast-in-situ leaf imprints and a mandala mural at the puja space, add layers of meaning and memory.
More than a house, Vara is an exploration of light, shadow, materiality, and tropical living—where every day is shaped by the changing patterns of the sun.
