Do you want to know how bad the mosquitoes really get in Alaska?
In this video we're going to be talking about that and all the tried and tested
remedies to keep them from sucking you dry.
Look at the size of these giant mosquitoes.
It's like something out of Jumanji.
I'm scared to open my mouth.
Yeah the mosquitoes up here they don't buzz like flap. You can hear them coming
Every spring in northern Alaska hordes of mosquitoes are born
and they last from mid-June all the way to mid-August.
The mosquitoes even have bodily fluids that resist
freezing so they can stay liquid form even when it's freezing outside it's
incredible. One great and well available option for
keeping mosquitoes away is the mosquito coil. We've been using these
since pretty much South America. They're a great thing to have in the car.
Now they don't work very well when you're outside camping if there's any
kind of wind because the smoke blows away but
they do keep the mosquitoes away when you're in an enclosed space like the
combi. With that in mind these giant insect
repellent stakes are basically a large version of the
insect coils but for use outside so they don't really work unless
there's absolutely zero wind. We do not recommend them. They don't even
stick in the ground. What works better than the giant stake
is the citronella candle. It produces a lot more smoke
and it smells nicer. The citronella candle is great for indoors but if you
want to use something outdoors which you should
use the tiki torch. The tiki torch creates a lot more smoke
it's atmospheric and smells great too. Or you can always build a fire it's free
and it's been tried and tested for a thousand years. Now there's a couple of
options with nets in your vehicle. You can go for
this option where you block out the windows which is
a pretty easy option and it allows you to have ventilation.
This is a pretty budget option. This is just a net trapped in the door. You can
get nets that you cut for your vehicle and put them in
with velcro. The downside of that is that you have to make sure that no
mosquitoes get into your vehicle. As you can see we
keep the doors open all the time. We have them open when we're cooking.
We come in and out of them all day so it's really hard to get the mosquitoes
out. What we do is we have a net over our bed
to keep the mosquitoes out while we sleep. As annoying as mosquitoes can be
it's part of nature and we certainly weren't going to let them stop us
exploring. I mean we were still having fun. I'll
race you to 10 okay? You're going to race me to 10? Now wait, wait, wait.
You know in a sadistic kind of way mosquito tennis is actually kind of fun.
It helps keep you sane whilst you're out adventuring in Alaska.
So as you can see there's a number of ways to stop the mosquitoes from
spoiling your fun. So don't let these little blood suckers
stop you from seeing one of the most amazing places on the planet.
Until next time, happy travels. You thought you were jumping under my
liner.
