The End of Anglo-Saxon England | The Death of Kings | DOCUMENTARY

The day after Edward the Confessors death there was a meeting of the Witan to decide who would become the next king of England. The Witan was made up of a group of many lords and bishops and they considered the merits of four main candidates: William the Duke of Normandy, Harold Godwinson, Edgar Ætheling the last direct descendant of Alfred the Great and Harald Hardrada. This dispute would culminate in some of the most epic battles in history.
