NEW HARMONY
A mystery woman, a one-of-a-kind trophy with a dark past, and an appraisal that could rival Antiques Roadshow—all from one remarkable day in New Harmony, Indiana.

America’s original utopia hosts a wonderful antique show on the second weekend of June, befitting New Harmony’s two centuries as a place of learning and vision. We are here in New Harmony, Indiana, to add to that tradition with an entertaining and informative appraisal fair, where wonderful antiques and vintage items of all types come to be evaluated—including a piece so unique and valuable that it could appear on Antiques Roadshow.

This is a place where the past is celebrated, and we discover local-interest items like a Victorian wagon, a local ice pick, and a hand-hewn candle stand that have remained in their place of origin for generations. Heirloom jewelry reveals family stories, from modest Depression-era wedding rings to elegant Victorian watch chains, portrait pins, and bar pins. A mystery woman leaves clues to her origin, and we investigate them as best we can despite her decades-long separation from her family.

Bye-Lo dolls, model Gatling guns, charming ceramic kitchen figures, and tableware saved for years bring the past into the present. We address such conundrums as when it is appropriate to use vintage items in daily life, whether to repair a damaged piece, and why donating a $15,000 plaque to a museum may not result in its public display. From dime-store trinkets to a one-of-a-kind trophy with a dark past, we find great treasures and even greater stories to share at this appraisal show.
