The Rise & Fall of the Danelaw

History Profiles

The Danelaw was the region of England where, from the late ninth century until the Norman Conquest, Danish laws held sway over Anglo-Saxon rule. It emerged from the Danish Viking conquest and occupation of vast territories across eastern and northern England during the late ninth century. The term refers to those areas where English kings permitted the Viking settlers to retain their own legal customs after the early tenth-century reconquest of Danish-ruled lands—granting this privilege in exchange for the settlers’ loyalty to the English crown.

This video will trace the full story of the Danelaw: its origins, its rise to prominence, and ultimately, its decline and disappearance.
