Cædwalla of Wessex was not a typical king. He rose from exile, fought his way to power, and carved out his rule through relentless war across southern England. From Sussex to Kent and the Isle of Wight, his campaigns reshaped the political and religious landscape of the Anglo-Saxon world.

At a time when Christianity was spreading but not yet complete, Cædwalla’s conquests helped push that transformation forward—often through force. His invasion of the Isle of Wight marked the fall of one of the last openly pagan kingdoms, ending the rule of Arwald and bringing the island under West Saxon control.

Yet his story is full of contradictions. For all his role in a changing Christian England, Cædwalla himself remained unbaptized during his wars. Only at the very end of his life did he abandon his throne, travel to Rome, and receive baptism from Pope Sergius I—dying shortly after, far from the lands he had conquered.

This is the story of a ruthless warlord, a king of conquest, and a man caught between two worlds—pagan past and Christian future.
