Chablis. Everyone's heard of it. Everyone thinks they like it. But is it actually worth the money?
This week I taste my way through a frankly irresponsible number of bottles to find the best Chablis for the money …

Ooh, I can hear the sea.
This is a very silly video.
Look at this.
All of these guys say Chablis on.
You think they all taste the same, but they don't,
and none of them tell us what great variety it's made of.
I fell in love with this wine a long time ago,
and I actually fell doubly in love with it
two weeks ago when I went to a Tesco's tasting
and tasted this.
Come in close on this, Fred.
It is the nuts, but it costs 25 quid.
We're gonna find out why I love it.
You're probably gonna love it too,
because we're gonna find the best Chablis
in the Super Mercados.
Let's play with this one.
First of all, what is a really, really good Chablis?
So Chablis is a region in the middle of France, Burgundy.
It's North Burgundy.
They're only allowed to grow Chardonnay.
The special thing about it is the soils.
It is literally like walking in dinosaur land.
It's fossil, fossil, fossil, fossil, fossil,
and these guys are not allowed to water their vines.
They plant their vine.
Their vine goes root, root, root, root, root,
15 feet deep into the soil.
Fred, that's bigger than you,
and it sucks up all the nutrients from the soil
and makes this wine barely similar if it was Italian.
Good Chablis should smell like marzipan meets a lemon.
That is my marzipan meeting a lemon.
Shit all over my bed.
That is an absolutely beautiful wine.
If you've got 25 quid,
don't even bother with the rest of this video.
Buy that.
Marzipan-y, lemony, slightly rich,
slightly sort of salty, and it's very, very long,
which means I taste it forever and ever,
and I'm absolutely in love with it.
Right, if we're not gonna fall asleep,
we gotta get cracking.
That's 25 quid, and we're gonna see
whether we can beat it for 15 quid.
I'm not sure where these are from,
other than this one I know is Marks & Spence.
It's their collection Chablis.
This is a Chablis Premier Cru,
is like better than Chablis.
It's vineyards that are in better places
than just straight Chablis.
Because the slopes face in the right way,
so it's all about the right way.
So, **** you.
When it's even better, basically,
when it touches the sun and drains beautifully
and has an awful lot of lovely soul in it,
they go, that's even better.
It's a Grand Cru.
But quite frankly, we're under 15 quid here.
We're not shopping Grand Cru Chablis.
We're in Marks & Spence's number nine classics.
I want it dry.
I want it citrusy.
I want it saline.
I want it alive.
That's very, very good.
It's got a nice whack of lime to it.
This is the kind of Chardonnay
that actually tastes more like a Savy Bee.
It's very fresh, very zippy,
and that's a really good one.
But it's not as good as this.
This little chap, this one, Fred,
has just got much more complexity.
But don't worry, we're going to find you something.
Oh, ----.
I've run out of gas.
****.
Fred, come on.
There's very few things that you've got to do,
and it's just helped me not be a cock on camera.
So this is a great preservation system, this.
It is the Corovan,
and it squirts in a little bit of inert gas,
which means you don't get any oxygen,
but we do get some Chabri.
In we go.
There's, I think this is a Waitrose one.
So these are all around sort of 11.5, 12% alcohol, I think.
This one's 13.
Generally, if you get a bit more alcohol in there,
you get a bit more juiciness.
Much as we say we don't like it,
we like alcohol and we like sugar.
That is a beautifully fresh, lively wine.
It's more green apple.
So this one's more lime.
This one's more green apple.
And now we're going Laurent Delony, 2023.
No idea where this comes from,
and it should be available in the supermarkets.
And I'm looking for something that is not only delicious,
not only really tasty, clean, zippy Chablis.
I want something that's going to grab me by my testicles
and give me a little yank.
That's more like it.
That's getting slightly richer,
a little bit more sort of buttery.
This, by the way, is posh wine.
We are not Lidl under five.
We're not Audi under five.
This is, you're going to go and see your in-laws
and you're going to take something really good
that they're going to go, ooh, you're a bit special.
2024, exceptional, which must mean it's from Asda.
Let's go on this.
So Chablis is the region and all the bits around it
might say anything about the vineyard
or the person who grows it.
Let's say on this last one, we've got Laurent Delony.
So I've never met Laurent,
but he's some dude who says he's fifth generation winemaker,
which means he should know how to do ----.
And he does.
That's terribly complicated.
Let's just get it in the glass.
That's rude.
Keep the camera on.
That's a little bit bland.
Exceptional by Asda is completely and utterly unexceptional.
So it tastes a little bit like battery acid.
It's got acidity, not much fruit, no butter,
and no marzipan, which means you,
if I had an ass shelf, might be going on it.
Now, here we go to Asda again,
and we've got their Fami Bocca.
These guys make great, great wine.
Bocca is an old, established Chablis-producing family.
I used to import wine from them years ago.
They make very clean, very juicy,
quite rich style of Chablis.
So let's have a go.
In the hole she goes.
Oh ----, that's delicious.
Fred, we're going a lineup of what are the best wines, okay?
We're trying to hit the 25 quid one.
That is nudging on the door of that.
Very good.
Here we go, 2024.
Fred, I don't need two of these, mate.
I'll shove that there.
We've got to get through this video.
Then we've got UVC Chablis,
which means Union des Viticulteurs des Chablis.
So it means if this is a **** up,
the whole union's a **** up.
2023, it smells of pretty much nothing,
which is not a good thing so far.
And that's got a little bit of marzipan.
It's got a little bit of butter,
but it doesn't have that beautiful
zing limey lemon citrusy bit,
which means, sorry mate,
you're going around here, okay?
Now Chablis Vieilles Vignes.
Vieilles Vignes means like old vines.
So we're going to see whether this Vieilles Vignes Chablis
is more complex than these guys
and could be knocking on the door of this guy.
I'm not spitting that out.
So that's made by J. Moreau et Fils.
So they're, again, a really, really good winemaker there.
It's their Vieilles Vignes Appellation Controle Chablis,
12 and a half percent, it slaps.
****, that is a really, really delicious wine.
Okay, now we've got two more.
Chablis Premier Cru, we're going to whack that in the hole.
We're from Boca.
We're again with a very, very well-known winemaker here.
And it's really, really lush.
I don't know whether it's as lush as this on the nose.
And that's got a lovely bit of butter to it,
but not quite as much as this.
That is a straight Villard Chablis, this one.
And that is a Premier Cru Chablis.
And that is a straight Villard Chablis.
Okay?
That's nicer than the Premier Cru.
But it's, yeah, you can often get,
if you get a good grower with old vines,
you look more on the grower
than you do on actually where it comes from.
But I haven't done this for little.
That's quite a good Chablis, that.
And I bet it costs literally nothing.
Okay, you're going to love this.
**** all of this.
Rack them up.
I want a blind tasting of four wines.
I literally piss my pants love Chablis.
I want to find the best one.
And I don't really give a **** what it costs.
Rack them up.
Let's get it done.
See you in four.
Right.
I said four.
You tit.
Right.
We have got five, not four, white wines.
I really hope they're all Chablis.
Are you proud that I've learned how to count?
Yeah, you're absolutely awesome.
Well done.
I'm just going to pick my best.
I'm going to rate them one, two, three, four, five.
And I think this game is called
make a cock out of your father.
That's definitely a Chablis.
Absolutely delicious Chablis.
So far, out of one, that's first.
Does it just go in this order?
Number two.
Right.
Rich, juicy.
That's a big, rich, ballsy little chap.
Fred, on me, is buttery-tastic, which is very generous.
It tastes more like a big, fat, white Burgundy
rather than a fine, zippy little Chablis.
But I'm going to pop it.
Number one.
It's a glass of class.
Number three.
Very good, but not my winner.
This goes third and just tastes a little bit flat.
It hasn't got the energy of these two.
These two are like...
Number four.
Oh, I'm not spitting that out.
That is absolutely delicious.
It's not quite as rich as that.
Can I have a second equal?
You can.
Sweet.
Right, what the...
Number five.
Am I going to make a prick out of myself?
Try.
Okay, number five.
Is that a Chablis?
That's a Chablis.
They're all Chablis?
I think so.
That's very, very, very rich.
It just doesn't have that sort of zippiness.
I want zippy from Chablis.
Oh, ******* hell.
I prefer number two to number one.
And it's not as good as number one.
And this is number three.
Right, this is where we go.
My favourite Chablis by a whisker is number two.
I think it's Tesco's Premier Cru
buttery, lemony, saline, zippy-tastic Chablis Premier Cru.
Number two.
My second favourite I think is Sainsbury's.
Vievin, really bloody good Chablis,
knocking on the door to be as good as that.
Very, very good.
In third place is Fred, it's your number five.
I'm not even sure that that's a Chablis.
I think you're ******* with me.
Then we've got your number three, Fred.
I'm guessing, yeah.
I think that's probably a,
someone rather Delaunay from wherever it is.
That's a guess.
And then number four is a Premier Cru Chablis
from Boca, from Asda.
How have I done?
You've got 20%.
What?
Tell me what this is.
That's Tesco's, you've got that correct.
------- great.
Tell me what that is.
That's the Dolorens.
Shit, it's really good.
Where on earth is that wine from?
If it's under 15 quid, that is an absolute banger wine.
What is that?
If it were a Chablis, what Chablis would it be?
It's very ripe.
It's big and it's ripe.
It's expensive.
It would be a Chablis Grand Cru.
Costs like 75 quid.
Does it?
I'd rather drink that.
This is Lidl.
You're shitting with me.
It's a totally good Chablis.
Number four?
St. Bruce's.
****.
Why do we do this?
It just makes a mockery out of wine.
Makes a mockery out of me and wine.
Wine of the day for me is that.
It is a very good Chablis.
Oh, here we go.
Yeah, nice.
Lauren Delaunay, Le Crapiage Chablis 2023.
Let's get it open, have a glass.
If you want to get into Chablis
and find out what it should taste like,
that absolutely slaps.
If you want to find out what good dry white wine,
good Chablis should taste like,
mixing salt, lemons and marzipan,
get your laughing gear round a bottle of this.
And Fred, can you find out where it comes from
and how much it costs?
