We're on a 10-day kayak fishing and overland camping expedition
across Baja Mexico. We started on the Pacific side in Mag Bay
and caught some good fish but the bite wasn't hot enough
so we packed up camp and moved across the peninsula to the Sea of Cortez.
We got there to find a ton of sharks but weeded through them to catch some good
fish. Now it's our final day at camp the
sharks are gone and I'm on the hunt for a big yellowtail.
This is what we're here for. Welcome back to Field Trips
Baja. That's the Mezcal talking. Good lord it is quite literally
a lake out here. The Lake of Cortez does not get any calmer. Crazy.
Yeah honestly guys it's a little too rough out here. I'm feeling unsafe.
I think I'm gonna I'm gonna head back. Copy that.
Absurdly calm.
There he is. Sea turtle coming up to get a breath.
I have something on this raffle of this diver but it is tiny.
What? Oh god. I snagged a baby triggerfish in the
forehead. What are you doing little guy? What are
you doing? The bait's as long as you are. Yeah I
can't feel good. I'm sorry. He's going out of here now.
This thing gets a bit big or small. There's a ton of marks below me. I think
it's more of those guys. I'm gonna get out of here.
I just heard whales coming up out here offshore of me.
Look there he is. Wow.
That was right on top of him.
That was insane. Wow man going off. That's crazy.
Oh there's two of them. Oh one's much. Oh I think it's a mom
and her baby. That's like 10 jumps already. It's still going.
God it looked like it landed right on Matt.
Holy dude is he okay? Boogie can you tell?
Man mom and baby putting on a show for us first thing in the morning.
What a treat you guys. What a treat.
That first jump was right next to Matt's kayak. That was crazy.
You could say that was a little scary honestly. It's a baby
I think humpback and it is just frisky. Jumping jumping jumping.
Yeah I had a mom splash me with her tail one time when I got too close to the
baby. Pretty nice you guys. Got my coffee
watching whales jump. There was a manta ray just jumped.
There's life everywhere. Manta ray just came clean out of the water
right here in front of me. A little whale watching tour.
Caught a couple small fish. Life is good y'all.
What a morning. What a morning. Sipping my coffee watching whales and
manta rays. The weather is perfect. Couldn't squeeze a complaint out of me
if you tried. Except for maybe that I lost my voice.
It's annoying. Life is good. Another fish on the diver.
I didn't even notice as I was watching this whale jumping.
But it also feels small. I got a feeling it's the same damn thing.
Baby trigger even on the shallow diver.
Oh no it's a skipjack. A little skippy.
Oh no we got it. That would be money bait in Panama.
It'd be good bait here for a marlin but it's not really what I'm doing
yet. I don't really have a setup to catch a marlin.
Man that whale that was nuts. Jumping right on top of Matt.
Crazy. This little baby whale which actually the babies make me really
nervous. The adults they're smart. They know we're there.
They'll breach pretty close to your kayak like in Panama but I never really
worry about them like landing on me. The babies they'll just jump over and over
and they're not smart. I don't think you know
I don't think they would try to avoid you. I don't think they're paying
attention. They're just like wee and uh when a baby weighs whatever two
tons like a damn Volkswagen jumping on you
um it's a problem. That was close to Matt. Crazy. He said he
came up and like basically kissed his kayak
and then started jumping right next to him like Matt got him excited or
something. I don't know. That was wild. Hopefully some of that
video came out. I'm pretty far still but he jumped like 30 times. Crazy.
No shark. All fish. They were pretty good sized fish man.
They get big ones here. What's this guy doing just rolling right up on oh oh.
Yeah Rob. Fish on the jig. Second drop in the morning.
Not real big but not tiny.
Yeah not tiny. It's pretty heavy.
Oh dude. What is this? It might be a better fish than I
thought. It could be a jack. Kind of feels like a
jack actually. I don't really know how many jacks they
have out here. Jack of all. It kind of feels like that type of
fight.
Whatever it is got me bendo.
Oh nice little workout first thing in the morning.
I haven't even finished my coffee yet.
Dang. Man this could even be a yellowtail. I don't know.
This is on the Capstan Elite 6000 from Cast King.
A solid fish. I did not think it was this good of a fish.
See what we got. What we got.
Dang now I'm wondering if it's a yellowtail.
This might be a yellowtail you guys. Now it's still pulling like that.
Goodness gracious. Oh my gosh.
Right now this much endurance is making me think it's a yellowtail.
Trying to get away from my other line.
Dude.
Amigos. Good fish first thing here in the morning.
And I think it's wrapped my other line. I'm not gonna worry about that right now.
Yeah it's definitely wrapped my other line.
I'd say this has to be a yellowtail. It's still pulling that hard.
Good fish you guys. First thing this morning.
He's coming up now. He's close. Yellowtail. Nice yellowtail.
Yes sir.
Nice yellowtail. You guys. This is what we're here for.
Mexican gold. Oh yeah. Nice one. Nice fish.
Nice fish.
Yes sir.
Yeah buddy.
Amigos.
Ahora si.
Kicked my ass.
That's a good freaking time there ladies and gentlemen.
Morelos de Castillo se llama.
Look at that on the jig.
That was a fight and a half. Goodness gracious.
Second drop of the jig of the morning. Now we talking.
Sharks are gone. Salud.
Oh yeah.
Mexican gold baby. Big old yellowtail.
It was so, dude what a fight.
God I think it's almost like the tables for the fishery are just starting to turn.
Something's changed dude. It feels different out here.
No sharks yet.
When those mahis started coming yesterday I was like ah.
Something's changed.
Just one hook right in the roof of the mouth there.
That's all it needed.
Ah buddy.
Yes sir. Yes sir.
Ahora si.
There. I'm just gonna.
Oh dude.
Oh that's solid.
It's a solid fish.
Yeah. I was thinking 25 pounds. Yeah.
What are you?
Huh?
What color of jig?
Uh. Azul.
Second drop of the morning.
Ah man you guys that feels good.
Honestly this trip has been uh tough for your boy.
Tough bite and some heartbreaks.
These other guys they've all caught yellowtail.
They've all caught um just some good fish.
I really have not.
I've really been struggling these first few days of this thing.
And to come out here and second drop of the morning with the jig.
Bag out uh one of the biggest yellowtails of the trip.
If not that might have been the biggest one we've seen so far.
Feels good. It feels good you guys.
Yesterday the heartbreak with the mahi in my kayak and still lost it.
Another good fish on the jig that just came off.
Another good fish on the popper that just came off.
Just been having some bad lucks.
Bad breaks.
Some some execution issues.
I'm not gonna say it's all luck.
I've messed up some of those fights.
Especially the mahi.
But it feels good to get that bite.
First thing this morning for it to be that fish.
And uh it did not make it easy.
Screaming runs.
On the capstan elite.
And uh got it in.
Success.
First thing in the morning.
That that fish made my whole trip.
Those things are so dang strong.
You guys saw that.
And to catch it on the jig.
Life is good y'all.
Whale watching while we sip our coffee.
And then uh bagging out some Mexican gold first thing.
That's good eating.
Good fight.
Feeling good y'all.
On top of the world right now.
Thanks for being here.
Thanks for joining me on this adventure.
It's our last day at this campsite.
And uh yeah it's off to a great start.
I'm just yapping it really to give my arm a little breather here.
And then we're gonna drop the jig again.
I just came back to that spot.
Let's get some more.
Oh what?
Damn broke them off.
There's still some fish down there boys.
Tell y'all what.
Five days into this camping, kayak fishing, Baja Warriors expedition.
And I'm feeling it y'all.
I'm feeling it.
I'm sitting here jigging and after catching that yellowtail I'm like a little worn out.
I got cuts, bruises, scrapes.
I feel like I've been rode hard and put up wet as they say.
But it's all right.
There's fish to be caught.
Just keep dropping.
Jig through the paint.
That's what we're gonna do.
Oh yeah.
I will say this 140 gram jig's getting a little old.
I may uh drop down to like an 80 or a 60 here before too long.
Oh yeah.
Embrace the burn.
Loving this jig though.
I've never dropped this, this model, this jig.
Shimano.
I've caught a bunch of fish on this trip and now my one yellowtail came on it.
Liking this thing.
That's hooked up.
Yeah buddy.
Nice.
Mexican gold.
We on them today.
Sharknado's moved on.
Wow you know what's funny dude?
We are 30 feet from my mark where I caught mine.
Look at this tiny jig.
Heck yeah dude.
That's good news.
I'm gonna tote on a lighter jig because I'm dying.
My shoulder is...
Yeah he's a pretty good one.
Big guy.
Yeah stud.
Nicely done.
Baja warriors baby.
We on the yellows.
Sick.
Beautiful fish man.
All bloody and sick.
Yellowtail.
That's a good one.
Almost as big as mine.
Nice work dude.
Yeah dude they're such bruisers.
Thank you for your service in letting me know I can downsize my jig.
They will hit a smaller jig and they're not moving deeper so I'm going to downsize from
the 140 gram to a 60 gram so I can save my arms because it's still early in the morning.
We got a lot of fishing left to do.
I'm gonna stand up and jig so that while I'm standing I can also be looking and I've got
my popper ready to go in case I get a mahi.
I would love some redemption, some revenge on a mahi mahi, a dorado because that one
yesterday just embarrassed me, bitch slapped me, treated me like a dirty hooker and I'm
upset about it.
I'm angry about it and we're gonna get some redemption for sure.
Oh we're on.
Yeah baby.
Look at that first drop.
I think it hit it on the drop.
I closed the bail and it was just on.
But I don't think it's a yellowtail or if it is he hasn't woken up yet.
Yeah baby.
If it's a yellowtail it's much smaller.
Well I say that he's pulling me.
Sleigh ride baby, he's pulling me.
Goodness, maybe it is a yellowtail.
I think it is.
It's just not as big or he just doesn't know.
Oh gosh.
Yeah baby.
Welcome back to La Paz.
This is what this was supposed to be going like yesterday.
Oh my god.
Ben Doe.
My good friend Ben, Ben Dover.
He's gonna cross my dag on the line again.
Big jig, small jig.
They don't seem to mind.
Oh my arm y'all.
Feeling it.
Okay I see him on my sounder.
He's 15 meters down.
There he is.
He's got color.
Man you guys feeling the burn.
What we got?
Oh no.
He's gonna wrap my line.
Yep he's wrapping my line.
I need to just get rid of this second thing here.
This is not worth it.
Not worth the hassle.
Number two baby.
If I can get him in.
It's not up yet.
They're so strong.
God.
Dog he's pulling me backwards.
Stop.
This is crazy.
You're being ridiculous sir.
And he's wrapping this line again.
Good dog.
This thing is freaking working me.
He's right here.
I just can't get him up the rest of the way.
Yeah baby.
One of the strongest fighting fish pound for pound on planet earth.
Y'all aren't gathering that here.
There he is.
He's not even as big as the first one.
Matt I'm tired.
No.
Oh yeah.
Oh it's not.
It's a jack.
God dog it.
A big jack.
He just spit up like a squid or something.
Yeah big old jack.
Goodness gracious.
He hit it on the drop.
I just closed the bail and started pulling back.
Stud freaking jack.
I'm gonna lose it here.
Dog.
Freaking jack and a half.
There dude.
Look at that y'all.
That's a proper jack of all.
Goodness gracious.
These fish are such bruisers.
I have tangoed with this species many times.
Lord have mercy.
Hit it on the drop.
First drop with this jig.
Good sign.
It works.
Heck yeah.
Sick.
Welcome back to La Paz baby.
Big fish.
Goodness.
And I just tied that jig on.
And there we go.
See you later big guy.
Thanks for the tug amigo.
There he goes.
I just tied this lighter jig on.
That was first drop and they hit it on the fall.
I put these crazy squid hooks on there.
Yeah.
I feel like on the fall that squid like just gives a really good action.
And it worked right there.
Uh good morning ladies and gentlemen.
Fish are chewing.
Sharks are gone.
And the pelagics have moved in.
Oh yeah boogie zone boogie zone.
Those of you who have watched this entire series may be wondering why we haven't seen
any more catches from old boogie.
Those things pull man.
Well somehow after day one he got his camera stuck in time-lapse mode.
I mean it's a damn tuna that size yeah.
So he sent me 30 time-lapses of him catching fish throughout the trip.
As my mother would say bless his little heart.
He tried.
I'll just scream right here.
I caught him on a top.
I caught him on a top water.
Wesley Snipes on the other hand did manage to capture some of his hookups.
My first cast.
Might be a shark.
I don't know.
It's not fighting like a yellow.
Nah.
They thump thump thump thump thump and then sometimes you feel like you lost them.
Oh I see it.
Bro I don't think that's a shark.
That's not a shark.
Freaking ahi.
No.
I think it's an ahi.
I'm gonna freaking harpoon him while standing.
They got no lures here?
He said he got a big jack.
That looks like a yellowtail to me.
Nah.
Look at this thing.
It's a rooster?
Nah it's a lure.
Look at that thing.
It was cool to see that explosion.
Here.
You brought him up out of deep water.
You gonna let it go or what are you gonna do?
I don't know.
I don't need it but.
He's got a big jack to volley it looks like.
On a popper.
Nice one.
I mean for me it's fun because I'm catching stuff I don't even know what it is.
All the boys are catching fish.
Here's Esterban with another nice jack.
Hey guys I got a huge jack.
Let me see it first.
Nice big old jack for Wes here.
Big boy.
On the jig huh?
Nice work.
I'm on on the popper.
On on the popper.
Oh yeah.
Something crushed it.
I heard an explosion behind me.
I got something on the popper.
I heard an explosion behind me.
I've been throwing the popper in front of me because all these birds.
Look at these frigates.
Million of them.
And then I heard something behind me so I quit throwing it in front of me.
Threw it down behind me.
In one cast.
And something on the popper.
I wasn't recording because my GoPros are overheating.
But I had a feeling I was about to get bit.
And you know what I think this might be?
I think this is a Jack Revol.
They call them Doros here which is the word for bull.
And that's kind of what it feels like to fight.
Oh and that camera just died or overheated.
I got color.
I think it's a jack.
And I think there's more with it because my fish finder's loaded.
On the top water.
Oh no!
No!
And my popper's full of water.
It's broken.
Right below the boat.
I don't know how.
It was pulling drag.
Well you guys.
Unfortunately that is all she wrote.
For this Baja Mexican adventure.
Being able to see a few different spots on this incredible coastline.
This incredible part of the world.
To do some fishing.
To just be living on the beach.
No other humans around with this crew.
Just cannot say enough about it.
Mateo, Matt, Esteban, you two.
Thank you so much.
Just incredible hosts.
Incredible guys.
So much fun to be around.
Such fishy guys.
So helpful.
Great chefs.
Amazing.
And to be able to bring my boys Boogie and Wes here.
All the way from Hawaii and share this experience with those two guys.
I love you guys.
Man, what a trip.
As I have said earlier in the series.
If you want to come down and do this, you can.
Baja Warriors is the name of the game.
I don't think they even have their website set up yet as of right now while I'm recording this.
But that information will be on the screen right now.
It will be in the description.
Check them out, guys.
They're talking about extremely reasonable prices.
And just what a unique experience.
Not just to come down here and kayak fish.
This legendary fishery.
I mean, this was a pretty tough bite.
Matt and Esteban were both saying, man.
It sucks that you guys are down here and the bite's so tough.
And I'm like, tough bite.
You know, we're catching mahi and yellowtail and grouper and big jacks.
And all this stuff from the kayaks.
Launching off the beach.
It's incredible.
Yeah, this is a tough week, you guys.
So you can imagine what this place is like when it's on fire.
I absolutely love it down here.
And really, the fishing is just a bonus.
Just living out in the desert, on the beach.
In this incredible custom trailer that Matt has built.
Just so cool.
Nothing like it that I know of on earth.
Where you can come as a client and do something like this.
Yeah, can't say enough about it, guys.
Check it out.
I'm going to be coming back and guiding select certain trips.
If you book a trip with Baja Warriors, you may show up down here in La Paz, Mexico.
And I'll meet you at the airport.
And we'll come out and live in these tents, camp.
There's so many other places around here in this coastline in southern Baja
that we can go fish.
There's Loreto, Punta Arenas, Cabo.
Lots of places.
And basically, when you get here,
they're going to take you to wherever they think the bites can be best.
Based on local knowledge, based on their scouting.
Man, the only complaint I have is it's too short.
I don't want to go home.
I could sleep in these tents another week.
It's so comfortable.
It's just so fun.
This was so fun.
But heading back in and we got to get camp broken down.
I'm probably going to whip out some of that ceviche I made last night.
This stuff was banging.
Probably have a little snack.
We got to clean some fish.
And then I think tonight we're going to go to La Paz, to El Centro.
Fun, super fun nightlife.
If you do put this trip, you ought to book an extra day on each end
and just kind of experience La Paz.
It's just a wonderful, wonderful town.
I think we're going to take this fish that we caught,
take it to a restaurant and have them cook it up a few different ways for us.
So that part will be short, but I'll bring you guys along for that.
What an adventure, y'all.
Thank you so much for coming along.
Thanks for joining me on this.
Incredible.
I will definitely be back.
And like I said, you should come down and do this.
And maybe you'll show up and your boy Rob here will be your guide.
I'd love to meet some of you guys.
I think the best part about Baja is the weather, y'all.
Cools off to like 60 at night.
Perfect camping weather.
And then during the day, it's like 80.
Like it doesn't get crazy hot.
It's just freaking lovely.
Hopefully, I'll get my voice back soon.
I'm going to quit yapping.
See you guys.
We're going to break down camp.
We'll see you guys at dinner.
Back in civilization.
Unfortunately, I already missed this place.
We haven't even left yet.
What a trip.
Life's good, y'all.
Here at camp.
A little fresh ceviche in a seashell.
Where am I right now?
Paradise.
That's where.
Mahi mahi ceviche.
It's even better than it was last night.
It's been marinating.
Nicely done, gentlemen.
The final countdown.
And that is pretty much all she wrote, ladies and gents.
That's a wrap.
We're gonna go back to civilization.
Take these fish.
Let somebody else cook it.
So we'll let someone else do the work.
We've been working hard for a week straight.
What a trip.
What an experience.
What a rig.
Look at this thing.
Salud, boys.
Baja warriors.
We survived.
Field tripping.
Thanks for everything, you guys.
Sashimi.
Oh, no.
Sushi.
Oh, wow.
Look at that.
It's a little loud.
Little chaotic.
I don't even know what all's going on there, but it's so good.
One's swimming today.
So this is what they call sashimi here.
They put it in some kind of sauce with other stuff.
It's really good.
That was good.
Chips for all of it.
Chips for whatever you want it to be for.
I like that sauce in the middle.
Here we go again.
All right, boys.
Salud.
What a pleasure.
We don't even know what this is.
It's on the house.
And that's all she wrote.
Another epic field trip here in La Paz.
Time to get home.
Catch you guys on the next one.
