The dealer interrogation. This protection package is required.
You finally agree on a vehicle price, things seem to be going smoothly,
and then suddenly the dealership says, this protection package is required.
Folks, this is one of the most abused phrases in the entire car business,
because what buyers hear is, okay, I guess the manufacturer requires it,
but what dealerships often really mean, we added a bunch of extra profit to the car.
That's the translation.
Now, to be fair, there are rare situations where a dealer-installed item is physically
already on the vehicle. Maybe wheel locks, tint, running boards, paint film, mud guards.
But here's the problem. Many dealerships take inexpensive products
and mark them up to absolutely insane levels.
I've seen nitrogen tires go for $499, VIN etching for $899, paint protection for $1995,
security packages for $2500, door edge guards for hundreds of dollars.
Folks, some of these products cost the dealer almost nothing.
And once they're added, the dealership tries to make you feel trapped.
That's the game because psychologically, once buyers test drive the car,
picture themselves owning it, call family members, imagine it sitting in their driveway,
they become emotionally attached and dealers know this.
So now comes the pressure phrase. Well, unfortunately, it's already installed.
Every one of our vehicles comes with it. We can't remove it. It's required.
But here's the question buyers almost never ask. Required by who or by what?
That's the magic question because sometimes the answer is not the manufacturer, not the bank,
not the government. Sometimes it only is required by the dealership itself. Huge difference there.
And folks, this is where buyers get confused because dealerships often blend together
legitimate fees, dealer installed products, optional protections,
government charges to make everything feel mandatory. That confusion, it creates profit.
Now, let me be crystal clear about something. If a dealer says this package is required to
buy the vehicle, you should immediately start asking questions like,
is this a dealer requirement or a manufacturer requirement? Can I see that in writing?
Is the product optional? What exactly does this package include? Can I buy the vehicle without it?
If you can't remember these questions, just start asking questions because once dealers realize
you understand the game, the conversation changes very quickly.
And folks, sometimes the package suddenly becomes negotiable. Funny how that happens.
Now, here's another thing people don't realize. Some dealerships advertise an amazing online price,
but the real profit is hidden in mandatory add-ons. So the car looks cheaper than competitors online
until you arrive. And then suddenly $3,000 protection package, $2,000 accessory package,
$1,500 theft package. And now the great deal just disappears. Poof, goes up in smoke.
This is one of the oldest tricks in the business. Hook buyers with the advertised price,
then recover profit later. That's why we constantly tell people stop focusing only on MSRP,
sale price, monthly payment, and focus on the out-the-door price. That's on both new and used
cars because that is where the truth lives. Folks, if a dealership truly has mandatory add-ons,
they should have zero problems discussing the full out-the-door price immediately.
But many don't want to do that. Why? Because once buyers see the real total,
the emotional spell gets broken. And that's dangerous for the dealership.
So the next time you hear this protection package is required,
mentally translate the statement to this. This is where we're trying to increase profit.
