59 days, no new cases, just 443 cases in total with 431 people already recovered,
leaving just five people in Taiwan requiring treatment for coronavirus.
Does that mean the way that Taiwan handled this crisis
left us foreigners, myself in particular, with unaffected lives in Taiwan?
How exactly did the coronavirus affect my life in Taiwan?
I'm going to be answering that question as well as several others in this video.
But first of all, let's get back down to the house,
right down there in Taichung city and see how we got here up this mountain.
Okay, yes, hello everybody, welcome back to the channel.
My name is Alan, this is My Life in Taiwan.
And in today's video, we have much more than just that juicy topic I introduced at the start.
We are also going to be talking about some future plans I have for the channel,
which is going to include the introduction to you guys
of an awesome piece of new equipment I've recently picked up.
And as well as that, we're not going to be doing it here in the city.
We're going to be getting out of the city into the local Taichung countryside
and hopefully showing off some of the beautiful scenery that this county and country has to offer.
But first, before we do that, I want to give you a quick update
on the subscriber versus non-subscriber ratio situation that we've got going on.
The numbers are increasing, but still only 35% of my viewers are subscribed to the channel.
So if you've been watching my channel for a while and you've been enjoying it,
then how about today?
Let's make this official.
Let's click that subscribe button and join the channel.
But anyway, yes, I think that's enough of an introduction for now.
I've got a scooter waiting to take me into the beautiful countryside.
Let's get on board, get out of the city and we'll catch up out in the country.
Let's go.
Okay.
So as you can see, we have now arrived in the Darkhang scenic area just outside of Taichung.
And basically, what are we doing here?
Well, there's a few reasons, as I mentioned earlier in the video.
One of which is that I really want to introduce this new piece of equipment
that I've been sent by Insta360.
It's their Insta360 One R action camera, 4K, 360 degrees.
As you no doubt could see from some of that footage.
But also as well as that, the reason that I'm here is I've got a big trip coming up in September
where I'll be climbing a rather high mountain.
My good friend Xiaofei, who's much more adventurous and knowledgeable on these kind of things,
told me that my usual Friday night regime of drinking beer is not enough exercise.
Therefore, he's advised me to get out into the mountains once or twice a week,
carry a bit of weight on my back and get ready for what's to come.
So I think it's enough talking.
Let's start to get up this trail,
take a look around, see if we can find some more beautiful scenery
and start discussing that main topic in the title of the video.
Let you into a little secret.
I think there's nine or ten trails here in Dakeng and I've never been here before really.
So when I saw all of the older people heading for this one,
I thought, yeah, I'm filming a video, so I'll make it easy on myself.
Take the easy route for now.
Come back to do difficult one later.
But gee whiz, I think I'm about halfway up and I'm absolutely gasping for breath.
I think Xiaofei might have been right.
It is a scorcher.
Now, Insta360 One R sent to me very kindly by the company Insta360
and up to now, 90% of the video has been shot using either the 4K camera or the 360 camera,
which I'll get to showing you right now, because I'm sure if you haven't seen it before,
many of you are very interested to see what it looks like.
This is the Insta360 as they have very kindly sent to me.
And as you can see, one lens on this side, another lens on the other side.
I am by no means a tech YouTuber, so I couldn't tell you how it works.
But I do know that it allows me to get some absolutely awesome footage such as this.
Yes, absolutely beautiful footage.
And I have to say that although I'm a YouTuber,
my editing skills are not extremely good,
but the software that comes with your iPhone and the computer is incredibly intuitive.
And I think most people, if you've got just a little bit of basic computer
know-how, will have no trouble at all turning your videos into awesome creations such as that.
But the great thing about this Insta360 One R is that it can go from this 360 setup
to this 4K wide-angle action camera, and both of which I believe are fully waterproof.
Like I said, I'm not really an in-depth tech YouTuber,
but what I am is a pretty lazy YouTuber that likes to find the easiest way to do things.
And this little thing on the end of a selfie stick was what I used when filming my Taipei video,
where I was talking about why I can never leave Taichung, go to Taipei.
And it was so easy.
Super lightweight, beautiful colors, very stable,
which is something a lot of people complain about if I use a non-stable camera.
So yeah, Insta360 One R definitely gets my seal of approval.
If you're looking for a small, convenient action camera
that also offers amazing 360 capabilities,
then this Insta360 is definitely what you're looking for.
I think that's all I want to say about this camera for now,
and I was planning on finishing the rest of the video sitting here, but it is so hot.
Let's get off this little pavilion and see if we can find somewhere under shade
to talk about recent events.
Let's talk a little bit about coronavirus and how it's affected me.
Of course, many of you, almost a million of you may have seen me in Blair Chen's video,
almost crying my eyes out about how coronavirus has stopped me from seeing my son.
And that's probably the one massive thing that it's affected me here in Taiwan.
I should go to see my son every six months at the least.
I usually go to see him for his birthday in September,
and then six months later for his half birthday in March.
So the last time I saw my son was in September for his seventh birthday,
and I was planning to go there March 20th,
but of course the flights all got cancelled.
South Africa wouldn't accept anybody that's from England,
and I tried my best, but ultimately it just stopped me getting there.
Other than that, the coronavirus in Taiwan has not affected me at all.
My life pretty much has not changed,
and I feel a little bit embarrassed to explain the real differences,
the things that affected me,
because the one thing that bothered me was I couldn't go to the post office.
Stupidly, I got frustrated with the girl for not letting me into the post office
because I wasn't wearing a mask,
and I just didn't think about what other people around the world are going through.
My family are kind of devastated.
They can't see each other.
They can't hug the grandkids.
My mum and dad are really worried about if my dad gets sick.
I know not just my family,
other people all around the world are going through absolute hell in lockdown,
but because of the way the situation was handled by Taiwan and the CECC,
we didn't get affected at all.
I think I had to wear a mask every time I took an Uber
is another difference that I can think of,
but the only thing that it's actually affected me is international travel,
and as I say, I feel embarrassed to even mention that
because of what everyone else is going through.
And while I'm talking about this topic of how the coronavirus
didn't really affect me here in Taiwan,
it kind of makes me think of another topic
that possibly I could talk about in another video
because Taiwan itself,
of course, because of the geography of being an island,
it's kind of cut off from the rest of the world.
Politically, some people may say,
but that's not what I'm talking about.
But also, yes, the coronavirus has been big news here.
People have taken a real big interest in other countries
and how they've dealt with it.
But often, if a news story doesn't affect Taiwan directly,
then many people don't really take such an interest in it.
And I don't want to say anything too kind of negative
or judgmental of Taiwanese people.
Of course, we all have to look after our own business
and take care of ourselves.
But often when I mention some kind of international news stories,
maybe smaller international news stories to Taiwanese friends,
a lot of them are maybe kind of unaware
or don't know the full details of something
because it's not directly affecting them in Taiwan.
And I have to admit,
I've kind of fallen into that trap a little bit
with this whole virus pandemic thing.
I've been doing exactly the same thing.
As I've mentioned a thousand times,
the William thing really affected me.
But other than that,
I've kind of buried my head in the sand
and kind of ignored the whole situation
because we just weren't affected by it.
And that's, as I say,
something that I feel a lot of Taiwanese people tend to do.
I don't know if you agree with me, if you do.
But if you do or you don't,
let me know in the comment section down below.
I'd love to know what you think on this point about
do Taiwanese people actually care so much
about international matters that don't affect them?
Are the political issues that we have here in Taiwan enough for us
that we don't actually need any other news from other countries?
I'm not sure if anyone will agree with me what I'm saying.
It's just my opinion as always.
But I'd love to get your opinion on it down below.
But anyway, I think as I get towards the bottom of this hike,
I'm also getting towards the end of the video.
If you've liked the video and you haven't yet subscribed,
please hit the subscribe button.
I know maybe it doesn't mean anything to you,
but every subscription means a lot to me.
And it's free.
My favorite price is free.
But yeah, I'm struggling again.
I'm walking down.
My legs are shaking.
Holy guacamole.
I don't think I'm going to have any problems getting up that mountain,
but I hope there's a helicopter to bring me off it.
Anyway, it's time to say goodbye.
So as for now and as always,
I'll see you next time on My Life in Taiwan.
