Pride march brings thousands to Center City Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Pride March kicked off in the city today. It stretched from 13th and Locust Streets to the Parkway, where a festival took place for the first time this year. Action News reporter Elizabeth Worthington was there. The city of brotherly love living up to its name on this bright and sunny Sunday afternoon. The Pride March and festival brought a rainbow of colors to Center City. I love the energy. I love that Philly is able to express themselves, you know, actually be able to come in an event and, you know, just be themselves, not be judged. Today just means love. Love trumps all. And there's more love than hate in the world, so we're here just to display that. Thousands of people participated in this year's Pride March, ending here at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, where the Pride Festival is taking place for the first time. It was previously held in the Gabor Hood, but organizers say as the festival expanded, so too has the need for a bigger space. The theme this year, Pride is Power. My existence is resistance, right? And so as I continue to navigate the systems, the world, policy rooms, I'm bringing that forward. With Pride Month celebrations leading right into America's 250th anniversary celebrations, some participants say this year's event takes on a deeper meaning. For me, it's in two respects. I grew up in Philadelphia. I lived near Independence Hall. I feel patriotism every single day, and I feel the Declaration of Independence, and I know that speaks to me as a gay man. The festival goes until 7 o'clock tonight. It costs $10 to enter. There are several road closures in the area, so be sure to check 6abc.com slash links for a full list before you head out tonight.
