The builder navigates weather challenges and design adjustments while finalizing the layout for the kitchen, office, and bathrooms, ultimately providing a tour of the newly defined spaces.
This week on OSRL, we finish framing the rooms of our house. Come on in and take a look.
How's it going everyone and welcome to the domestead. Now if you're new here,
my wife and I were building our own home off-grid here in the Arizona desert.
Now if you could do me a favor, give this video a big thumbs up and definitely subscribe
so you can see all this come together. Now if you caught our last video then you know
I got a good start on the framing on the inside of our home. I got one room done but I got a few
more to go. Now this is a perfect day to be out here working. A nice cool cloudy day. Look at that.
These are rare here so I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. I woke up this morning,
came outside and there was just a nice little drizzle. Not enough to call it a rain but just a
nice calm drizzle. Just enough to keep it nice and cool today. It's August and the temps should
be in the low 80s so perfect working temperatures. I love it. Oh careful. Careful you're gonna get
hurt. Megamix. I'll bring that into the dome for you man. Well today might prove to be kind of a
rainy day. We're getting some drizzle but a nice little bit of rain coming down. Not a lot so far
but we'll see if we get any more. This is kind of exciting. Yuba girl breakfast. Yuba food. That's it.
Wow so since we're getting all this rain and the poly tanks are full I thought why not
take this opportunity to fill everything up. So we're gonna put some extra water here in the
trailer. I think I might fill up this IBC tote over here. Yuba what you doing up there?
What you doing up there? So with that rain we got this morning we got almost a quarter inch of rain.
Not too bad but the poly tanks are full and I got some IBC totes full. Yeah I'm pretty excited.
I don't know how much water we're collecting in that cistern. I know people keep asking about it
and maybe we'll check it out towards the end of the season. Once the rain stopped we'll open
it up we'll check it out. Okay so back to the build. I want to put a board going from post to
post. Although I won't be able to get it exactly I want to attach it to the base of this post
but I had to knock some of this cob back so that the board will be able to fit along here.
Before I put the board in place I'm going to mix some new cob slap it in here and all along here
and then just nestle the board in place. So let's get a cob mix going and uh you know these two
building methods are just going to sort of combine right along so should be should be interesting.
All right so we had a little bit of a rain delay in the afternoon so I wasn't able to get as far
with the framing as I'd like but it's okay I'm back out here in the morning. I'm going to finish
up this wall then we're going to get started on this wall over here and once we do we'll have
another room done. So we got the laundry room done then this room will be done which we had
planned for but I think those plans have changed and it's kind of exciting so maybe we'll talk
about that a little bit later see what's going on with that and then time to get started. Then we
rooms left kitchen bathroom so let's get it done. All right so the bonus room is finished.
Framing is done for here of course gets a little crazy down here but uh all this is going to get
filled with dirt so that space under there will be gone. So plans for this room has changed we'll
probably go over kind of what that's all about. All right good morning so we got the office all
framed up and I got a good start on the kitchen framing. The kitchen is going to be one of the
largest rooms to get framed up so it's going to take a little bit. I got this really long wall
of course it's going to have a doorway over here and then another wall over there and we should be
done then I just got one more room to do. Very exciting I want to try and knock this out man
this is an absolutely perfect day to be getting things done out here. Nice cloudy cool and uh
now we're even getting a little bit of rain. Jess you got a garden growing over here.
Just feeling this wall here uh this wall is so much cooler than let's say the uh the dome.
Yeah you can just feel the difference on the unplastered part of the wall versus
the lime plaster it's a lot cooler. Yeah yeah noticeable noticeable temp difference.
I'm glad I pointed that out.
Got the kitchen all framed up and it's getting toward the evening but we're gonna see
how much of a start I can get on the last room so I am almost there. Exciting as you can see we got a
door over here this one leads to the pantry over here so we got a door right here and then we got
a door right here which will be the main entrance to the kitchen. It's a while just to see these
plans start to take shape and everything start to come together. Very exciting. All right so I'm down
to my last room bright and early get started hopefully I can knock this out sooner rather
than later. I got the top and bottom boards ready for the first wall and then we'll get the next
couple walls set up and we'll knock this out. Let's get it done. All right two walls framed up ready to
go. Already you can definitely get a almost a visual quality of like the full plan here but I
got two more walls to go and then we're all set. So we're going to start with the south wall
finish up with the west wall and we're all good to go. Dang well my goal was to get this done by
the end of the day but I fell a little short I have two boards left but I'll get those up
in a few minutes tomorrow no big deal. Woof almost there y'all right at the home stretch
but I'm losing too much light I can't see what I'm doing. All right until tomorrow. Oh Yuvie
waiting for breakfast? You waiting for breakfast? All right good morning well I got up this morning
and looks like we had a little bit of rain last night and when I say a little bit of rain I mean
a little bit of rain like it's just enough to kind of get the bottom of the rain gauge wet
and enough rain on the ground to uh make it wet enough to get some mud on the bottom of my shoe
but uh I got two more boards to put up I only got three left so I got it pretty close on the
boards I used let me get these up and then the framing will be all finished all right that is it
all the rooms are put together maybe we'll take down a little tour later and show you what these
rooms are all about very exciting now some good news and some bad news good news it's
Jess and I's anniversary 19 years married 24 years together I think we're planning on going out but
it looks like Jess caught a bug she's not feeling too well so we might be staying in today I'm going
to attempt to make sure she gets some rest today sometimes it's tough to keep her down but I'll
make sure she gets some rest I'm going to be switching from framing here to taking care of her
and making sure she's doing all right so I'll check back in with you later all right so I want
to address some of the questions that people had from the last video I think people are kind
of questioning the order of operations that I'm doing things in so the walls are something I've
been wanting to get done for a while I have a lot of attachments on these posts on the upper portion
but not so much on the lower portion you know we did the earthbag wall I figured that might add
some stability to the whole structure but I really wanted to get these walls in to sort
of tie everything together near the bottom add some more support for the roof I didn't want to
do more work on the roof add more weight up there without doing more to support things from the
bottom so that was that was a big thing with that as for the floor yeah we could have done more work
on the floor but I really wanted to get everything tied together and I don't think it'll matter too
much that the walls are in before the floor might make things a little bit more difficult
getting material around but I don't think it'll be a huge issue like we'll just do some of these
rooms individually now some people questioned about not only using wood but also untreated wood
with coming into contact with the ground and yes I think normally you would not want to do that
but we are on the inside and none of this soil should be getting wet everything should be really
nice and dry down here eventually these floors will be sealed as well so that's kind of my
reasoning for doing this before the other things now that these walls are in place and I feel more
comfortable with that I think I am going to start hitting the upper portion of that roof
getting some of these areas closed in and before we work on the floor I also got to do electrical
and plumbing in here too the plumbing in here is going to be kind of unique all the water is going
to be reused right inside the house so it's going to take a little planning and the plumbing will
actually have to go in before this floor because it's floor is going to get raised so definitely
a lot more to come oh would you look at this looks like the rain's not done with us yet
just getting a little bit of a sprinkle but uh it's really cooled things down today
and I love it I'm excited we'll see if we get any real rain or if it's just some drizzles but
this is cool I'll take it I'll take every little bit good morning good morning looks like we did
get hit with the storm last night we did get some rains after we went to bed and uh everything is
nice and soaked out here so let's see what we got last night I'm kind of excited
oh yeah look at that so about a quarter of an inch always can use that extra water I don't
think the IBC totes by the Hacienda are really getting a lot of water but you know
they're filling up a little bit still have a decent amount of water in here
and uh yeah they're it's getting some water but they're not quite even half full yet I have my
doubts that these uh totes will fill up by the end of the monsoon season which
a little disappointing but it is what it is you just gotta roll with it so I'm waiting for Jess
to get up and we'll see how she feels this morning like I said yesterday she was not
feeling all that great so hopefully today whatever bug she had is over and she's feeling
better but uh keep your fingers crossed and uh we'll see oh good morning how are you feeling today
okay better than yesterday yeah you had a really bad uh well your stomach wasn't feeling too well
yeah it's not good but you're feeling pretty good today uh yeah just 100 um still a little
nauseous are you yeah oh no well uh tell you what we could not celebrate our anniversary yesterday
I know that's heartbreaking but you know we still got to spend time together and we'll
we'll take a rain check on a little celebration what do you think
all right what do you think uh want to give them a little tour of uh
the rooms here yeah first of all like what do you think what do you think about seeing all this
together like that it's kind of crazy because it really changes the space inside here yeah
all right let's uh okay let's uh start at the beginning I think we covered the uh
laundry room okay uh let's uh go on to the next space phase through the wall
that was a good technique so now what was this room going to be we were thinking this would be
like a spare bedroom or something we were talking about it and we were thinking it
might make more sense to make it an office well that's it for the office let's move on to
where the magic happens the kitchen
all right this is the kitchen space not too bad huh yeah this is gonna be one of the larger rooms
how do you feel about the space do you like it do you think it'll be a good
space for making some foods making some delicious food it'll be good yeah and of
course this is where we'll enter that'll be the door for the kitchen then of course this right
here from the kitchen will be the door to the pantry do you want to phase again or do you want
to take the appropriate doors to get into the room i'll take the doors like a normal person i guess
and then this is the bathroom nice little bathroom space we'll be doing something special
with this wall right here we're gonna we'll detail that a little later on but that's gonna
be a decent amount of work and then i think some people mentioned about like a space for like
washing dogs and stuff like that which will be this last space over here we're gonna have to
phase to this wall because i'm not going all the way around um this here will uh will actually be
sort of like a spare bathroom one that can be accessed from the outside as well as like a little
dog washing station right yep yeah so very exciting about that so thanks so much for joining
us we really appreciate you following along man what a huge milestone so don't forget to give this
video a big thumbs up and then we'll catch you guys on the next video bye
