Cummins Water Pump Going Bad? Watch This

We have a leaking water pump on this Cummins. Good opportunity to walk people through the process in a series of short easily digestible videos. #diesel #mechanic #dieselengine #cummins
All right guys, so this is going to be part one of the mid-range Cummins water pump replacement.
So you see we got our new water pump, our new o-ring. We're going to put this water pump on
that engine right there. But the first thing we're going to do in part one of the video
is talk about coolant recovery. The coolant in this engine is still good. We had just filled it
up before we discovered the water pump leak. So what we did is we went down to our Cummins
department here at the school, borrowed this thing from them. According to them this machine
here costs like five grand and I'm like okay. But this thing is really cool though. It has a hose
that comes off of it right here and that hose plugs right in here to that quick disconnect.
And then what this guy can do is you can go from vacuum to pressure and you're going to use vacuum
to suck it out and then pressure to push all the coolant back in. But one of the key things you
got to remember to do is if we come over here to this side of the engine, you're going to notice
that we took the overflow cap here off because when you start to pull a vacuum and you're pulling
all that fluid out, you got to have the air be able to come in and displace that fluid or else
you're going to have a vacuum lock. So I had to change out the quick disconnects because apparently
the Cummins guys use a different size than we do. But we got the hose hooked up. We got the valve
closed. So really all that's left for us to do is to put this in the vacuum position
and then there's a valve right here that once you got that in the vacuum position,
you open this valve and it should start pulling the coolant out. So now we can see right now that
it's in the vacuum position building up vacuum. It might have to build up a significant amount
of vacuum before it actually starts pulling this out. We'll have to wait and see. But you
should be able to see it filling in this hose here pretty soon. So now we're starting to see
the vacuum is starting to pull it up. So this isn't as fast as I thought it would be. But to
be honest, the coolant exchange machine I use in the truck PM's class isn't that fast either.
But it is a lot cleaner, less messy than just draining it. It does save you the money of not
having to refill it with new coolant. And it does have this gauge here so you can see as it's
starting to fill up. So I'm not going to bore you guys with the entire process and I'm running out
of time on the clock. So I'm going to have to go here. But I will record part two which
is going to be removing the old water pump tomorrow.
