The speaker examines the \"Waysian\" (White-Asian) phenomenon, analyzing how \"Western palatability\" and proximity to whiteness influence social status and media representation. He critiques the tendency to prioritize certain phenotypes over others and warns against internal community divisions, ultimately calling for inclusivity and mutual respect across all Asian subgroups and mixed identities.
Oh-ho-ho-ho, okay. All right. I don't value Asians. I don't care about Asians
I do not care about them any more than I care about anybody else, but let's talk about it
Whoo, what a month for the blogs to talk about?
Asians, okay, and also blazions are part of the conversation, but it's focused on Asians. Let's be honest
so we're gonna talk about this because
Man, like is it the fact that we're talking so much about Asians mean that we care so much about them
Put them on a pedestal or is is it is this just a situation that kind of sparked a conversation about race and
Did that conversation about race come back around to the same old thing? It always does but
again, let's dive into it because I am somebody of the
Non-ambiguous
Never been mistaken for anything else but full Asian
Delegation aka full Asians that only only have been perceived as full Asians their entire life
I belong to that
Micro group segment delegation if you will, but anyways, this is what I got to say about it
Thousands of people gathered at Central Park's sheet meadow for what's been called a Waysian meetup
Waysian refers to people with both white and Asian heritage
And yeah, so this CNA clip kind of sums everything up, but I'm gonna be playing a bunch of other clips as well
But it comes back down to basically the event started off and it was titled
Waysian which it is referring to the white and Asian and not the other mixed Asians that are there
Although they did include everybody and I'll tell you more about
feedback that I got from friends who actually attended the event by the way and also I know some of the people who were very
Involved in the event by the way, so also shout out to Quentin when who's in there
He was interviewed and if you don't know he's half Vietnamese
His dad is Vietnamese and he speaks Vietnamese fluently. So he's also pretty Asian, but that is besides the point
I'm not here to hand out Asian cards this sub stack from Arigato
Aki went really viral and basically this is what it said. It said Waysian isn't really a culture
It's mostly an aesthetic phenotype right facial features
If you pass as white or look half Asian the term itself includes white in it
Waysian the article also says the current Waysian boom is attributed to Asian culture becoming more trendy Hollywood and media preferring Asians who still feel
Western palatable
Versus being fully Asian right because the people can kind of appeal to mark multiple audiences
I mean, you know in the Hollywood circles and modeling circles people have talked about this for many many decades
Also, I think I'm gonna add on it's also the rise of prominent Waysian athletes and celebrities
But however, I will be honest when people like Naomi Osaka and Roy Hachimura whom I'm big fans of because I'm really into sports
But since they're not
Waysian and I guess you would say phenotypically they look more black even though, you know
They can all speak Japanese that they didn't quite get
The boost this the whole conversation about them. Anyways, people did talk about it, but not as much
Also the substack says that Waysians fit perfectly into this slot because they are exotic but not too foreign and they count as
Asian enough to
Satisfy the representation aspect, but they feel familiar enough to Western audiences
They're not too Asian looking to throw people off. We got to stop putting Waysians on a pedestal
There's nothing wrong with being Waysian. I got Waysian friends. They're great. Some of them are great
I've met also Waysians or I should say mixed Asians who didn't seem down
and by the way
I will honestly say all the Blasians I've met in my life have been more I guess down for the
Culture or at least down for not feeling superior, but that's also because they're usually black and Asian. So
Guys see now we're getting into the weeds of things where I will say this
I've met a lot of mixed Asian people over my life and this is an anecdotal statistic. So whatever
I'm just coming off of my own
Observations and my feelings but if I've ever met mixed Asians who felt like that
They thought they were better than me. It did happen to be the Waysians
It was never the Blasians or the Latasians or Lasians or any of the other mix
What else would there be right? I mean, I'm just mixed Asians mixed with everything. But what I'm saying is that
That is a true experience in my opinion, right? But I've also met plenty of
Waysians who are on the squad they speak the language better than me
They try to do the customs better than me, whatever like it's not like no issue
But let's be honest, you know, and also I've met full Asians who think they're better than me for different reasons
But definitely it has felt like that
There has been a few Asians notable and I'm sure enough people if you've met enough people in your life
You've probably met some who kind of rubbed you the wrong way because you just felt like they thought they were better than you
And I think that is the real issue here. It's not the issue that the Waysians had a meetup. I don't mind
I think it's fun
Pulling up maps of Asia. It's funny. And this is just a subgroup that wants to find a community. There's nothing wrong with that
I mean, listen, there's subgroups within Asians who want to find community
So really the whole idea of the meetup is innocent and it's friendly
But the second people start thinking they're better or that they got the best of both worlds, so they're better than you
That's the issue. Let me play a clip from my Blasian friend Ryan Alexander Holmes
I think he put it pretty well here. The Waysians are rising. Yeah
Extasian power baby extasian power, but speaking as a high-ranking officer of the Blasian delegation
I must say to my Waysian brothers and sisters with great power comes great
Responsibility I must counsel you not to fall victim to the seduction of the power of proximity
Do not let them claim your greatness that they could not achieve themselves
Do not forget who you are outside of the acceptance that they've only decided to give you now
Do not let them erase your culture like they did your European ancestors. You remember used to have languages and
Good food. Sometimes the price for their acceptance is your erasure. Just saying I'm just saying so stay strong
Waysian brothers and sisters
Conversely on the other side
I have a comedian friend named Dan Yang who's also pretty funny and he gave his very dry and comedic take on the whole
Waysian thing and obviously he's full Asian. So there was just a Waysian meetup in Central Park
And you know shout out to my half brothers and sisters out there. I wish I could have joined but unfortunately
I don't have a white dad. It looks like a lot of fun like having a white dad looks like a blast
I wish I had one too, you know, tell me about
Steely Dan or about how Larry Bird is better than LeBron or whatever. They teach you but this looks fun
I gotta say a Waysian gathering like this. This is the white part of them doing this
listen, I think the whole Waysian thing hits home with a lot of full Asians because in my opinion in America where I grew up the
Waysian kids if they were obviously ended up being kind of good-looking
then they also got treated better or they were seen as more special amongst the Asians and obviously if you talk to
You know black American people within their community
There's probably similar dynamics of colorism and proximity to whiteness and all these words and white supremacy and people, you know
All the terms that you can think of right? We all understand that these dynamics do exist
And as a full Asian guy
I've definitely felt that because I grew up obviously at a time of my life
questioning whether I was inferior to a certain group in America and I had to get over that and now that I'm secure and
I'm confident
Obviously, I'm not gonna let some Waysian meetup make me question that I'm not gonna let this Waysian wave
Make me question that also it touches home because like we always heard like from full Asian girls
Like all that all that mixed guy or that hopper guy
We used to use the word hopper by the way before Waysian and I don't mind the word hopper
I actually prefer it to Waysian. But anyways, there was oh, yeah
Like his I like mixed guys mixed guys are the best and like on the other side guys
If full Asian guys did say that about girl mixed girls, but I would say you kind of felt like the girl said it more
Let's be honest. But hey again, we're just arguing over percentages here
Both sides did it one side probably didn't more this also reminds me of that conversation about Asian representation as that East
Asians kind of are
spearheading it or kind of coming in with all the power and
Structure to represent Asians versus Southeast Asians who might sometimes feel left out
I remember when crazy rich Asians came out and some Southeast plenty of Southeast Asians felt a part of that
But also some spoke up and said hey, you know what?
Like I don't really feel represented in this like I know that you guys are the Chinese Korea
Japanese kind of the ones with the mega cities and you know that you have the population and you have the big
Companies behind it and stuff. So maybe it feels like that the whole Asian wave is
Not focusing on Southeast Asian. So I understand like even within full Asians
We're having that conversation and what I always said is it always comes down to just respect
And showing appreciation for each other if you are of the more
powerful group, okay, let's be honest like
Chinese for example as
Much as Chinese get made fun of like it is a large group of people
It's a large language group and they do have a lot of big companies and a lot of money all together as a larger pool
Right, there's a lot going on there
And so what I mean is that all we can do is show respect and show
Appreciation for one another and I've always preached that on the channel
That's what me and David over the many many years have always tried to do is we've tried to be inclusive
But I also don't want to be blind to things either listen people are different
But you can appreciate all different cultures for different reasons. No single culture and no single type of person is
Categorically better we know that I mean if you want me to dig another layer deeper
It even reminds me of a conversation I've had and I've made videos about this with my brother
About the whole Oh Asian guys are having a moment. So before it was waitians having a moment
It was like whoa Asian guys are having a moment like people are still finding us sexy
Like they're loving kpop kdramas like they're loving like, you know
but and then a lot of average-looking Asian guys were like
Yo, does that really include me because I don't look like the kpop guys. I'm not like a kdrama guy
I'm not like a c-pop star. I don't look like Jackson Wang. Jackson Wang is getting a lot of love
What about me? I'm the average-looking Asian dude. Is this trickle down to me?
so
Listen at any point in any movement in any tide
Not everybody is going to feel equally represented. That is a fact
It's a fact of life
but as people who are
Part of the wave and I'm obviously not part of the wage and wave but I would say I guess I'm part of the Asian
wave
that happens to be
Comprised of mostly led by East Asians by population and economics by the way, but it is our job
To give shout outs and show reverence and then appreciate everybody else
That's what you're supposed to do
And that's how you build and keep a community together
The second people start trying to separate themselves on basis of feeling more superior or better than or like, oh, we're just more capable
So blah blah blah blah. That's when everything falls apart
Plus also, that's just not right. There's also just not enjoyable
Like there's tons of things about East Asian Confucian culture
Like I'm not with you know, like that's why I have friends of different groups
listen anybody who had any sort of
identity issues growing up which whether you were a
Hapa wage in Blazin person in an Asian zone or in a non-asian zone
If you're a full Asian and a non-asian zone or whatever
Situation it was that made you have some type of identity issues
There's always a desire to go find your tribe later in life or to at least feel comfortable
It doesn't mean that wagons are only gonna hang out with each other
It doesn't mean that it just means that they wanted a bond over something common and in a joking way
It's having a white father
but also
it could be having a white mom but less so and I think that people have to understand that everybody does want to
you know
sometimes people want to be the champion of their tribe people are trying to find a group that they can lead or
Feel special amongst and that is human nature and there's nothing wrong with that
I think at the end of the day as a person who has been a focal part of the full Asian movement. I
Gladly accept Hapa Asians mix Asians wagons blazions, whatever
so as long as they're showing reverence to the culture respect to the culture and respect to
The full Asians to be honest. I mean that is important
You can't disrespect full Asians. And again, we're not here to downplay people's white side or black side
I think phenotypically aesthetically the black side ends up showing more
But what I mean is that at the end of the day people are just looking for friends and looking for a good time
Do I think this wage and thing is a movement? No, it's not a political movement. It doesn't really have any weight behind it
It's fine. It's a fun thing. They want to do meetups around the cities do it
Are they gonna exclude people? No, they've learned their lesson and at the end of the day the whole thing has just sparked a conversation
What do you guys think? Are you with the wagons? Did you think it was cute?
Is there really is there really a problem with it?
No, people can hang out with whoever they want
But tell me what you would like to say to the Asian community or the blazing community. Anyways
Thank you so much for watching and until next time I'm out
Peace also, by the way
If you've ever thought about what actually makes an Asian person Asian me and David a long time ago
We made this video called get your Asian card and we listed a whole bunch of things that might make you Asian
It's a really old video done in the old **** bro style. But if you want to watch it, it's a fun watch
All right, I'm out
