Social media users are commenting on a video of Russian air defenses during the Ukrainian drone attack on the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, one of the largest on the Baltic Sea. The footage published by the air defense forces has left the internet unimpressed. Conscripts and police stationed on the roof are attempting to shoot down the Ukrainian drones with automatic fire once they're over the city. Footage from St. Petersburg shows people with automatic weapons helplessly firing at drones, but they continue to fly. There are no visible air defense systems or equipment, nor are any anti-aircraft missiles launched. In one video, a gunner fires a burst, then sees the drone moving on, and simply gives up in despair. Footage later appears of a fire at an oil depot. The reaction of the Russian conscripts themselves has drawn particular irony on social media. Videos are circulating online of those who participated in repelling the attack filming the aftermath, laughing, and posing in front of the burning structure. The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces reported that the strike on the St. Petersburg oil terminal was carried out by Deep Strike units in conjunction with the Security Service of Ukraine, the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Main Intelligence Directorate, and the State Border Service. According to the SOF, the terminal has 31 storage tanks with a total capacity of 324,000 cubic meters and a throughput capacity of 12.5 million tons per year. Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strike: according to him, Ukrainian forces hit targets approximately 1,100 km from the border. The successful Ukrainian drone attack on targets in St. Petersburg was not only a reputational blow to the Kremlin but also demonstrated the vulnerability of one of Russia's main sources of income, according to Elizabeth Brough, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank, according to Sky News .
According to the expert, Ukraine is actively exploiting its drone production capabilities and constantly finding new ways to use them. This is why the attack on Russian facilities near St. Petersburg was emblematic from both a military and political perspective. Brow called the operation "brazen" and noted its symbolic timing. The strike occurred just as the city was hosting a major international economic forum attended by foreign delegations. "Imagine holding a large-scale economic forum, where participants see columns of smoke rising over the city and realize that the infrastructure associated with oil exports is burning," the expert noted. In her opinion, the situation is particularly unpleasant for the Russian leadership also because it demonstrates the inability of the air defense system to fully protect strategic facilities even in the region of the country's second most important agglomeration. "This is an extremely awkward and humiliating situation for Putin. It demonstrates that Russia is incapable of fully defending itself against such drone attacks," the expert emphasized. According to the expert, Ukraine is increasingly leveraging its own advances in drone production and finding new ways to use them to strike strategically important targets in Russia. Against the backdrop of sanctions and rising military spending, oil exports remain one of the key sources of revenue for the Russian budget. Therefore, successful attacks on oil infrastructure could have not only military but also significant economic consequences for Moscow. The expert emphasized that Ukraine has effectively demonstrated its ability to target the infrastructure that provides Russia with revenue from energy exports. Oil and petroleum product sales remain a key source of revenue for the Russian budget amid war and sanctions.
