Sam demonstrates how to create an \"open bay window\" card that folds down to a 5x7 size. Using a specialized project pack, the tutorial covers the precise scoring and folding techniques required to create the window effect, the layering of decorative mats, and the optional addition of an acetate sheet for added depth and stability.
Hey everyone, Sam here. Today I'm going to show you how to make this open bay window card.
I've made these a few times before.
Different versions, I've done full versions, I've done apertures.
So you look in rather than the two strips.
I'll add them into a playlist so you can check them out.
This one folds down to 5x7 size.
You don't need any dies to make it.
The acetate on the front is optional.
You might have a big topper or you might have a big die that you're using.
There's lots of ways to decorate this.
You've got space on the back to write your message.
And yeah, dead easy to make so let's get started.
So all the supplies I'm using are from my new, it's a project pack.
So you get your papers.
There's two packs worth here but you do get your papers there.
You get a mix of travel theme and birthday.
And then you get loads of pre-cut words.
So you can make up different sentiments.
I've got celebrate, it's all about you.
And on this one I'm going to have hooray, it's all about you.
Maybe I'll change that actually so they're a bit different.
And then you get loads of ephemera.
So you can pop all of this out.
You can see there you've got, like I said, a mix of travel ones.
You can use them for mini albums.
There's also balloons.
You've got holiday inspired bits as well if you want to document a fun holiday.
You can see all the presents there.
You can see them on that one.
There's bottles of champagne.
There's so much.
The Earth.
Passport.
Different glasses.
Oyster.
Loads of sentiments as well.
It's a really lovely kit.
And already we've sold quite a few and the feedback's been really good.
So I'm hoping that off the back of that we can bring out more of these as well.
As always the products I use as well will be linked in the description box below.
So you want a piece of 11 by 7.
This is for your back panel.
Along the 11 inch side you're going to score at 1.5, 3, 8 and 9.5.
This is a 220, 230gsm so it's nice and soft.
So you fold it all that way.
And then you want to fold the two inner score lines back in like that.
And then they're going to go back out.
That's how it folds down because that's what you pull out.
So that's the shape that you want to create.
Then you want two strips that are 1.5 by 11.
And you're going to score both pieces at 1.5, 3, 8 and 9.5.
And this time you're creating the same fold.
So you're folding those ones in and then those out.
So you're creating that shape again like so.
And these will go here and here.
So we just want to add some glue onto the backs of the outer squares
and attach them to the top and the bottom.
Now if you wanted to you could add multiple strips.
I think this is the one that I've done.
I've done one with lots of different strips before.
So you could have two more if you wanted to with a little gap in between.
You might have one big one in the middle but be careful with your decoration
because if you do one in the middle it will still stand
but if you go quite heavy with your decoration it could topple over.
It probably wouldn't but just something to bear in mind.
So there's quite a few different, like I said, variations.
You can see that in the playlist with the other ones that I've made.
So I'm just going to stick down these four corners.
So whilst that's drying you can create and prepare all of your mats and layers.
So for the inside, the back, you want a piece of 4 3⁄4 by 6 3⁄4
and then the pattern paper is 4 1⁄2 by 6 1⁄2.
So that one is going to go down there.
Then I've got two long strips for each side here.
These are two pieces of 1 1⁄4 by 6 3⁄4
and then the pattern paper is two pieces of 1 by 6 1⁄2.
Now you can, if you want, do two more of that size
and stick them onto here first and then stick these pieces on
which is what I did on this one.
Can you see they're just the long strips?
But for these ones I've created smaller strips
so you can have the purple, in my case, that border in between.
So these are two pieces of 1 1⁄4 by 3 3⁄4
and then the pattern paper is 1 by 3 1⁄2.
We're going to go there and there
and then two pieces, the top and the bottom
and these again are 1 1⁄4 by 4 3⁄4 this time
and then 1 by 4 1⁄2.
So those will go there
and then I've got eight pieces
to go four along the top and four along the bottom
and these are eight pieces of 1 1⁄4 squared
and then 1 inch squared with the pattern paper.
So I'm going to stick all them down
and then I'll show you how to add your acetate
which I've already prepared and the last, the decoration.
That is everything stuck down
and then just make sure it all folds flat
and you can also use that as a guide
to make sure that these ones are nice and central.
You've got the borders at the top and the bottom there
but I think it looks really nice.
I think I prefer it with this size
than just two longer ones.
I think it looks a little bit more finished.
So now you can add your acetate.
Like I said, this is optional.
You might have a big topper.
As long as you've got something that will connect
to the two there.
But I've cut this piece which is just under 7.
I've done it 4 inches.
You could do just under 5 so it covers the whole piece.
That was a piece of scrap.
I think that was like 3 1⁄2.
So, you know, it is up to you
but you want to make sure it's just under 7
so it definitely goes behind the two there.
I've popped some red tape.
I've just cleaned it with some rubbing alcohol
or surgical spirit depending on where you are.
And then I'm just going to slide it underneath.
I just want to make sure that I get it.
Once you've got the top in
you can just kind of slide the whole thing down
so it sticks to the bottom part.
There we go.
I've got the acetate.
And then to decorate.
I've got all these bits here.
I'm going to start with the presents
kind of cascading down.
It might be easier to do it when it's open
because it does move around.
Kind of something like that.
Or I might have the presents at the bottom.
I might not use all of this.
I thought a couple of the balloons
would look nice on this one.
Maybe I'll just have a couple of presents.
More balloons.
Champagne and a glass.
Maybe just the one balloon.
And then the hooray.
Something like that.
There's the finished card.
Like I said, that's how it looks
when it's in the envelope.
And then, yeah, it opens.
You could have things hanging inside,
popping up.
You can have things suspended.
Like I said, I've done this style a lot.
And I've done ones with the full piece
and none of it's opened up.
And I've done an underwater one, I think,
and I had acetate in between these bits.
So as you moved it,
it looked like the fish were moving.
So like I said, check out the playlist
that will be coming up
because there's a lot more inspiration
and different ways to use this
and different sizes as well.
And again, there is the other one.
They are really, really nice
and great, this kit for these kind of quick cards.
These take no time at all.
So I hope you've enjoyed this fun
open window style card for me today.
