We're working to get more details about a deadly shooting in Norristown, Montgomery County.
Police have not confirmed the victim's age, but they believe he's a juvenile.
Action News reporter Cheyenne Corrine is live at Norristown Police Headquarters,
and Cheyenne, you just got an update from police. What are you hearing?
Hi, I'm actually instead standing in the neighborhood where that shooting happened,
and you can see that there's some police tape that is still remaining here on scene. Now,
at this time, police, they have not yet released the identity of the victim, but they say he's
a young man and likely a juvenile, and the police chief also says they do have a person
of interest who's being questioned and detained. However, he is still asking the community for
information. Norristown police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened last night around
8 30 on the 500 block of Marshall Street. Police described the person who died as a young man.
What I really am here for to talk about is the sense of gun violence is taking place,
not only in our municipality, but across the state. This does appear to be involving young
men, possibly juveniles. Chief Michael Trail says a person of interest has been detained and is
being questioned by investigators. There was some sort of altercation between the individual and
the victim and the suspect. This is not a random act of violence. This is individuals who actually
had engaged with one another previously to the previous to the shooting.
Last night, there was a large police presence on senior George Street with a particular focus
on Hall's Alley. It's a residential area with many surveillance cameras. Police say they're
using that footage in their investigation. I have seen personally there's some video that's
floating around on social media, so we're obviously gonna grab that. I would really
request people not circulate that. As of now, no charges have been filed, but an update from
the district attorney's office is expected this afternoon. It's a testament to what we need to do
to redouble our efforts to work to reduce gun violence in our community.
And I'm joined by Council Member William McCoy, who represents this area here in Norristown. And
you just left the high school, you said, and that's where the victim goes to school. What
can you tell us at this time? At the high school, I know there's a lot of grieving going on. There's
a lot of external sources that are coming into the high school to help aid to the grief that
the young men and women are experiencing. And yes, he's a ninth grader, a young man.
And anything you have to say to the community just about this senseless violence?
Definitely. I feel as though there's a lot of senseless violence going on in Norristown,
and I think it's important that black men and other men step up in the community
because this violence just continues going on. Absolutely. And at this time, police,
they still are investigating, and they're asking anyone with more information to please contact
them. We're live in Norristown, Cheyenne Corrine, Channel 6 Action News, back to you.
All right, Cheyenne, thank you.
