The Genetic Make Up of the Balkans How did Romans Goths Slavs Impact the Population
The Balkans—a region renowned for its complex and diverse ethnic makeup. Yet, despite this diversity, a vast majority of its inhabitants speak South Slavic languages. But this wasn't always the case. Historical accounts and archaeology suggest that Slavic-speaking populations are relatively recent arrivals, appearing only from the 6th Century AD.
Before the Slavs, the Balkans were a mosaic of peoples: Illyrians, Dacians, Thracians, and Greeks, all under the long shadow of the Roman Empire. Even Germanic groups, like the Bastarnae and the Goths, made their presence felt.
All of this raises a fascinating question: Did these migrations and cultural shifts leave a lasting genetic footprint?
In this video, I dive into a major 2023 study by Olalde et al. that analyzed the DNA of 136 individuals from the 1st Millennium AD Balkans. We'll explore the ancient genetic landscape, the surprising absence of Italian Roman ancestry, the massive influx of Anatolian DNA, the mysterious rise and fall of Gothic-related ancestry, and the profound, permanent impact of the Slavic migrations.
I also examine the perplexing cases of modern non-Slavic-speaking populations—Romanians and Albanians—whose genetic makeup offers unique insights into how language and genetics can diverge.
