What Charles Darwin Got Wrong About Human Evolution

In a recent Smithsonian interview, paleoanthropologist Ashley Hammond spoke about what is often called “the biggest misunderstanding in human evolution.” Hammond, an expert in the human pelvis, and a co-author of the landmark Science review “Fossil apes and human evolution,” revealed that the popular story of humankind rising from a knuckle-walking African ape is simply wrong, and that our ancestor was more likely an upright-walking European ape.
