Breaststroke Technique
The breaststroke can be one of the most complex strokes. It's very different from the other three strokes. To swim the breaststroke correctly, we need to talk about timing and hydrodynamic movements. In these first videos analyzing the breaststroke technique, we will focus on three phases of timing.
Arms
Legs
Glide
In this particular video, we will go through the first phase. It has three parts.
Opening -
Pulling -
Recovery -
To practice this movement, you can perform a drill on the edge of the pull. This will help you know how far your arm should go before recovering. You can also practice opening and pulling with this drill.
If you have difficulty focusing on both arms, practice the breaststroke with one arm. This will help you become more aware of each movement and create muscle memory through repetition.
Many beginners tend to perform a slow, wide arm movement, but the main focus of breaststroke is timing and hydrodynamics, creating the least possible drag on each leg. You'll learn how to do that here.
