Kuhn, a four-year-old boy, struggles with jealousy and feelings of neglect after the birth of his sister, Mirai. Through a series of magical encounters with future versions of his family and ancestors in alternate realms, Kuhn gains empathy and understanding, eventually accepting his sister and reconciling with his parents.
Kuhn is a four-year-old boy. You know, he is a spoiled little child. However, all his privilege
is taken from him after the birth of his little sister, Mirai. How will Kuhn cope with this?
Watch out and take care. Kuhn is a four-years-old son of his mother, Yumi, and his architect father.
At the movie's beginning, he is alone at home with his aunt and his dog, Yuko,
because his mother has gone into labor. Trust me, Kuhn is excited to meet his little sister.
When his aunt tells him his mother will soon be home, he keeps playing his game and anticipating
his mother's arrival. Kuhn leaves to play with Yuko. He sees the snow falling and is excited
by this scene. A moment later, his parents arrive. Kuhn is happy to see his little sister,
fantasizing about the names he will call her and where he will take her to. The next morning,
as Kuhn wakes, his mother is breastfeeding the baby while his father is multitasking in the
chores. Kuhn is given breakfast, but he is used to the attention of being the only child,
so he keeps asking for other things and keeps calling for his mother, who is exclusive to
taking care of baby Mirai. His mother's maternity leave is short-lived, as another staff of her
workshop is going on maternity leave, so his father, who is now freelancing, has to take care
of his house. Hence, one day, as Yumi trains her husband on how to clean the house, feed the child,
Kuhn calls for their attention, but no one answers. He angrily goes into the room to taunt
Mirai until the little girl starts crying. Yumi comes inside, but Kuhn refuses to stop taunting
Mirai. Kuhn throws his train at her, and Yumi angrily pushes Kuhn away. He shouts out in tears,
but his mother is more interested in Mirai. As he cries, his father enters the room too,
but both his parents are more interested in calming Mirai. Devastated, Kuhn runs out of
the house and starts crying. He hears a voice saying, how miserable. He draws towards the voice
and meets a man who calls himself Prince. He tells him he feels jealous because of his brother,
and Prince also says he felt that way. Prince says that when Kuhn was born, he felt jealous of Kuhn,
because all the privileges he enjoyed in the house were no longer there. He no longer got
supplements, good meals, and all the attention was completely drawn to Kuhn. As they talk,
Kuhn figures Prince is the human version of his dog Yuko, so he sees Yuko's tail and drags them
out. He puts the tail on his body and changes into a dog. He runs around the house like a dog
and plays with Yuko. As he returns to his human form, he tells his parents that Yuko needs good
dog feed, and his father gets dog feed for Yuko. The jealousy continues as Mirai keeps getting more
attention from their parents. One day, Yumi shows Kuhn her photo album. He sees his mother's
childhood pictures and looks at them. Yumi's business trip draws nearer. Before her trip,
their grandparents visit. They attempt to video only Mirai, but Kuhn keeps jumping into the video.
He asks for a picture too, and his grandparents reluctantly take his picture. As they continue
with Mirai's picture, they notice a birthmark on Mirai's hands and ask her parents about it. Also,
on Girls' Day, there is a custom for female babies where they place pictures of dolls on the table to
female kids good luck. His parents set this doll up while they talk about this custom,
and say that if the doll stays more than it should on the table, the girl will marry late.
It means that if the doll stays a day, the girl's marriage will be extended for a year.
Yumi eventually leaves for her trip. She leaves her kids with her husband and reminds him to
remove the doll. His father struggles with shopping, cleaning the house, washing the plates,
and caring for the house. The only available time for him, he tries to work on his project.
It is this time that Kuhn wants him. Kuhn calls out for his father to no avail and angrily goes
to Mirai. He taunts her, tells her he hates her, and places a biscuit on her body. He angrily
leaves the house, and he is transported to another realm. He sees an older lady, but the lady calls
him Big Brother. He sees the birthmark on the lady's hand and realizes she is his sister Mirai.
Mirai asks him why he hates her, but she begs him for a favor. She says that the doll has
stayed an extended day, and if it keeps staying, she may never get to marry the love of her life.
So she begs him to help her remind their father to remove the doll. He refuses to help her,
so she punishes him with a game of V where she stings him, and he laughs. He goes to remind
their father, but he is still busy. As he reminds him, Mirai enters the house to remove the doll
herself. Their father notices Mirai is no longer in her baby chair, so future Mirai jumps out.
They figure that future and present Mirai can't stay in a particular room, so Mirai asks her
brother to distract their father while she removes the doll with Yuko. After their successful deal,
she asks him if he now likes her, but he replies otherwise. Yumi eventually gets back. She
appreciates her husband for remembering to remove the doll, but his father insists he isn't the one
that removed it. Kun tells them that he is the one who removed it. He tells his parents that he met
future Mirai, and they played the sting game and the green light red light together. One day while
his father is at work, Kun scatters all his toys on the ground. Yumi begs him to pack them up and
threatens to not buy him toys again, but he refuses. She screams at him, and he starts crying.
At about the same time, she hears a knock on the door, so she drops Mirai in her baby bed to attend
to the knock. As she leaves for the door, Kun carries his bag of toys and pours it on the floor.
He calls his mother Hag and says he won't speak to her again. He leaves the house,
and he meets Mirai again. She begs him to stop hitting her and pleads to be nicer to their
parents. However, he refuses to hear her pleas. He walks away and finds himself in another realm.
He meets his mother when she is young and thinks she is crying, so he goes to meet her and pet her.
She tells him she isn't crying, but she is writing an emotional letter to her grandma.
She says she is asking her grandma for a cat as she loves animals, but her grandma is allergic
to animals. His mother takes him home and puts the letter in her grandma's shoe. They leave grandma's
house and walk home. On their way, his mother tells him she has a weak little brother and a
crying baby, so her mother loves her more than her brother. As they reach her house, they scatter
the house with toys and eat the food. When the grandmother arrives, Kun leaves his mother and
returns in the rain while his grandmother scolds his mother. Apparently, it's a dream and Kun is
sleeping. His mother kisses him and wishes him great sleep, then speaks with her mother about
the difficulties of raising a child. Later, Kun, Mirai, and their father go to the field. On the
field, Kun asks his father to help him pedal his bicycle. However, as they practice riding, Mirai
starts crying, so his father leaves him alone to attend to Mirai. As they return home, Kun angrily
tells his father he hates him and leaves the house with his helmet. He throws the helmet away
and enters another realm where he sees a man with several bicycles, and the man offers to teach him
how to ride. He refuses the strange man's offer and watches him as he leaves. He follows the man
and sees his leg is injured. The man tells him he was injured during the war and takes him into a
horse stable. The man takes him on the horse and they ride the bike together. Upon waking up the
morning, Kun takes his helmet and tells his father he wants to go to the field. At the field, Kun
single-handedly rides his bike after several tries, and his parents are excited on his behalf.
Upon getting home, he checks his parents' photo gallery and sees the picture of the man he met
in his vision. His mother tells him the man is his great-grandfather. It's the summer period and the
most awaited summer camp. His father gives him blue pants to wear, but Kun refuses to wear them.
He throws the pants away and requests the yellow one. His mother doesn't answer him, so he hides in
the bathtub while his parents leave. After they have left, he stands up, prepares himself, and
goes to the train station. At the station, he meets a man who asks him whether the summer memories
aren't better than yellow paint. The man asks him to go back home and apologize to his parents so
he can for summer, but Kun refuses. He takes the train alone and goes to the Tokyo train station.
At the station, he realizes he didn't have a ticket. He sits and several parents call for
their kids, and he eventually goes to the Lost But Found section to declare himself lost.
Unfortunately, he doesn't know his parents' names, and the kids who couldn't be found are to take the
train to the Lonely Land. He is forced into a train where he finds several mysterious beings.
The Lonely Train is held. He sees Mirai there and runs to her. For the first time, he accepts Mirai
as his baby sister and goes to carry her. Suddenly, baby Mirai disappears from his hands,
and adult Mirai appears. Adult Mirai takes him, flying him. As they play, they fly through several
times in the past. He passes through where their great-grandfather and mother first met
and took a relay race together. Kun also sees that his father is too weak to ride a bike.
They see how his mother stops liking cats after she sees one kill a bird. He also sees his future
self before going home. Upon getting home, he happily wears the blue shorts. Before his trip,
he sees Mirai on the way, gives her a banana, and plays with her. Their family leaves for
their summer vacation happily. Thank you for watching the recap.
