Not everyone decides to RV Canada During Winter and stay on Vancouver Island, but so far it has been an amazing experience. One of the most exciting things has been to see BC's ionic old growth forests. Our first attempt was to drive to Carmanah which didn't work out due to lack of preparedness. Our second attempt was to go to The Cathedral Grove and Stamp Provincial Park in Port Alberni Vancouver Island to see the Old Growth Forests that are protected. In this video we will cover: 1. Cathedral Grove 2. History of Old Douglas Fir Spruce tress that are over 800 years old. 3. The reality of logging of old growth forests on Vancouver Island BC old growth forests are the biggest and oldest that have existed on Earth’s history, their ecosystems having evolved over thousands of years with the Red Woods in the USA being second to their grandeur. This is thousands of years of evolution in one tree. These trees hold ancient wisdom. They quietly hold the stories of human civilization and their purpose is to make life liveable on earth. But while we may think they are in abundance on Vancouver Island, the truth is, large scale industrial logging is happening right now and these ancient old growth trees are not protected and even in 2020 are being logged. In a matter or weeks or days 1000 years of growth can be cut down for short term gain. When these old forests are logged the second growth is profoundly different. Ancient Forest Alliance are key advocates in conservation and are showing logging towns like Port Alberni that ecotourism brings in dollars and sustains these ancient giants. You cannot replace 1000 years of growth with simply replanting. It's time to start thinking long term and see these big trees as an economic driver with ecotourism. Wouldn’t you want to stand in front of a these giants.
