I visited Nuuk, Greenland, the Most Remote Capital City on the Largest Island which is also the Emptiest Country in the World! 🇬🇱
On my first trip to Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), I explore Nuuk, the Northernmost Capital City in the World, which, with a population around 20,000 would just be a small town in most parts of the world. But considering how empty and remote Greenland is, with a total population of just 57,000 residents despite it taking up 2.17 million sq km, compared to the rest of the country, Nuuk is the BUSTLING metropolis and only real city.
I visited the autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark in late December 2025, in the heart of Winter, where there is less than 4 hours of daylight per day! There are also no roads leaving Nuuk or connecting any 2 settlements in Greenland, in large part because 80% of the island is govered by a massive ice sheet. And there are only 4-5 flights per week to the island from Copenhagen, Denmark, with another 2 per week from Reykjavik, Iceland, the only 2 yearround connections to the outside world.
Why does anyone live on this isolated, barren, dark, freezing island in the Arctic Ocean? Why is Nuuk growing and becoming more international with thousands moving in from all over the world? And what is life really like for the 20,000 Greenlanders who choose to live in one of the most unknown and misunderstood places on Earth? Join me on this epic road trip to find out!
