Close Encounter with B1 Killer Whales, Antarctica!

In Antarctica, a pod of Type B1 Killer Whales surrounded our zodiac, spy-hopping to check us out and see if we were on the menu. Locking eyes with these magnificent apex predators was the most incredible wildlife encounter of my career.

This was shortly after our team observed them checking out a Leopard Seal nearby, whom was resting on a large ice floe (also in this video).

This is the rare ecotype of Killer Whale that has learned the cooperative wave-washing technique to flush seals from ice floes.
