The Singing Bridge Residences project was topped off this morning in Chicopee in what will be the tallest residential building in the city.
22 News reporter Nick Antonakis joins us live in studio now with what the project is expected to bring to the community.
Julia, the topping off ceremony not only marks a major milestone in the construction process,
it recognizes the boots on the ground in this massive project.
The four acre property that sits at 75 Main Street in Chicopee
is being redeveloped into 105 mixed income affordable housing units.
Western Buildings is leading the charge on the construction side of things,
with developers financing the project with an over $37 million loan from Mass Housing.
Their efforts were celebrated with workers signing a beam that now sits atop the building.
The property will bring a lot to the community,
but Mayor John Vu is most excited for the development to tackle this main issue facing much of western Massachusetts.
Housing, we need it. So excited to see that.
And again, repurposing a site, a brownfield site that's been sitting dormant for decades,
and cleaning it up and getting to the point where today you're seeing progress with 105 units behind us.
And that to me is something very special.
In addition to the mayor, city officials, development partners and other community leaders
were all in attendance to raise the top beam.
The development is the third major revitalization effort undertaken by the city in the Chicopee Falls area,
as the fight back against housing insecurity continues.
Working for you, Nick Antonakis, 22 News.
