A Modern Granary Hidden in Portugal’s Forest

Granary House in Arouca, designed by Marta Brandão and Mimahousing, is a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional rural granaries once common in northern Portugal. Set within a lush natural landscape, the 110-square-meter home combines a dark timber exterior with a warm pine-lined interior, creating a strong contrast between outside and inside. Through its narrow linear form, sliding wooden panels, and carefully framed views, the project balances simplicity, functionality, and a deep connection to the surrounding environment while preserving the memory of local architecture in a modern way.
