"One Pingjiang Road, half of Suzhou." With a history of over 2500 years, Pingjiang Road is a vivid microcosm of Suzhou's ancient city. Here, the ancient system of "waterways and land routes running parallel, rivers and streets adjacent" is preserved. Bluestone paths meander forward, the Pingjiang River shimmers, and 11 ancient bridges span it, each holding a story of bygone eras.
Don't fixate on the popular tourist spots. Stroll slowly through the alleys, and you'll encounter boatwomen rowing their boats, humming Wu songs; elderly women sitting on the riverbank railings, basking in the sun; and artisans meticulously polishing fan ribs in a fan workshop. If you get hungry, find an old shop where the sweet aroma of osmanthus cakes and the refreshing taste of Suzhou-style soup noodles are authentic Suzhou flavors.
When you're tired, retreat to a Pingtan (storytelling and ballad singing) hall, order a cup of Biluochun tea, and listen to the melodious Wu dialect singing of talented scholars and beautiful women. Postcards from "Cat's Sky City" and handmade Suzhou embroidery at the end of the alleys hold little surprises at every turn. Here, time flows slowly, and the elegance and everyday life of Jiangnan are all blended into this alleyway.
Suzhou is a renowned historical and cultural city in China, boasting a history of over 2,500 years and often referred to as "Paradise on Earth." Its history can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period, when King Helü of Wu commissioned Wu Zixu to build the Helü Great City, laying the foundation for the ancient city of Suzhou. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Suzhou became one of the nation's economic and cultural centers, famous for its gardens, silk, and Suzhou storytelling.
