United Kingdom's new Global Health Insurance Card initiated, as part of UK-EU deal.
Global Health Insurance Card, will slowly substitute current European health insurance
cards.
The government has already announced that, UK residents will currently be allowed to
apply for a UK Global Health Insurance Card.
Under Britain's new arrangement with the EU, UK residents' rights to emergency, and
medically necessary health care, will carry on when travelling in the EU.
This involves medically necessary care for a pre-existing, or chronic condition.
Present European health insurance cards, are applicable on condition that, they are in
date and individuals can carry on to use these when travelling to the EU.
Individuals are only required to apply for their new GHIC, when their present EHIC expires.
Both cards will provide same protection for emergency, and medically necessary health
care needs, when in the European Union on a temporary stay, which comprises study, holiday,
and business journey.
The new GHIC card is free to acquire, from the official GHIC website.
Individuals must apply at least two weeks, before they intend to travel to make sure
their card arrives on time.
Edward Agar, Minister for Health stated.
Our deal with the European Union, makes sure the right for our citizens to access necessary
health care on their holidays, and travels to countries in the European Union will continue.
The GHIC is an important component of the UK's future relationship with the European
Union, and will give confidence and security for all UK nationals.
Cover for emergency and medically necessary health care, is fragment of a broader health
care agreement, arranged with the European Union, that will see prolonged cooperation
on health care for UK residents.
If a UK resident is taking a trip without a card, they are still allowed to necessary
health care, and must contact the NHS Business Services Authority, which overlays the whole
of the UK, who can arrange for expense, should they need treatment when outside the UK.
European Union member state EHIC, will carry on to be accepted by the NHS.
Together with the deal with the European Union, the UK is open to accepting additional mutual
health care arrangements, that can look after UK residents when they travel.
The UK government constantly notifies that, anyone travelling abroad, whether to the EU
or elsewhere in the world, should take out comprehensive travel insurance.
