Float Over The Sun Vol IV - Three Million Image Timelapse - Monochrome
Over the course of 42 hours between April 3rd and May 16th, 2026, I captured nearly 3 million individual frames of our Sun to create this monochrome solar timelapse. Every frame was recorded from my backyard using a Heliostar 76, Tele Vue 2x Powermate, modified Lunt B1200, Apollo 428M MAX camera, and a ZWO AM5 mount.
I chose to keep this project entirely monochrome to preserve the raw detail and scientific authenticity of the data. Without artificial colorization, the fine structure within the solar prominences, flares, filaments, and evolving sunspots becomes the true focus. You’ll notice delicate plasma motion across the chromosphere, constantly shifting magnetic activity, and immense prominences extending far beyond the visible surface of the Sun.
To help convey the scale of what you’re seeing, I also meticulously calculated and added an approximate Earth size reference. Even at this scale, our planet appears almost insignificant compared to the violent activity unfolding across the solar surface.
