These are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured – and they reveal a hidden landscape of tiny whirlpools twisting around its magnetic boundaries.

Captured by the NSF’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaiʻi, the extraordinary images provide the first direct observations of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities on the Sun.

These spiral-like patterns form where two fluids move past each other at different speeds, much like breaking ocean waves or rolling cloud formations. On the Sun, however, the 'fluid' is turbulent magnetic plasma.

Scientists expected to find these vortices, but they were stunned by how widespread they appear to be. The discovery suggests the instability may play an important role in mixing plasma and magnetic fields, transporting energy through the solar atmosphere and potentially contributing to the eruptions that drive space weather.
