This restoration began with a gamble.

Hidden among dozens of lots in an online antique auction was a small anonymous portrait, buried beneath heavily yellowed varnish and years of neglect. A painting with no signature, no provenance, and no clear history attached to it.

At first glance, it would have been very easy to ignore.

But there was something about the expression… and the confidence in the brushwork… that immediately caught my attention.

In this full restoration, I carefully clean the painting layer by layer, remove the oxidised varnish, investigate the possible origins and period of the portrait, carry out structural and aesthetic conservation treatments, restore the original frame, and slowly reveal the character hidden beneath decades of darkness.

Although the artist remains unknown, the painting itself tells a story — one of sensitivity, craftsmanship, and survival through time.
