For this Mother's Day I'm recounting a once-in-a-lifetime blue whale encounter off San Diego that I shared with my Mom!

While a mother blue whale dove deep to feed on krill, her calf stayed beside our whale watching boat for nearly an hour, circling, surfacing, and even vocalizing loud enough for us to hear through the hull.
