Join me for a calm early morning walk through the historic market town of Stow-on-the-Wold in the Cotswolds. Filmed at the start of the day, this walk follows quiet streets, old stone buildings, and peaceful corners of one of the highest and most historic towns in the Cotswolds.
There’s no talking or music — just natural sounds, footsteps through the town, birds in the background, and the gentle atmosphere of a countryside morning.
Stow-on-the-Wold is a historic market town in Gloucestershire, set high on an 800-foot hill in the heart of the Cotswolds. The town’s name comes from Old English, with “stow” meaning meeting place and “wold” referring to upland hills.
Stow became an important centre for the medieval wool trade and was once famous for its large sheep fairs, where thousands of sheep were traded in the market square. The broad market place at the centre of the town reflects this prosperous period in Cotswold history.
One of the town’s most famous landmarks is St Edward’s Church, parts of which date back to the medieval period. Its north door, framed by ancient yew trees, has become one of the most photographed scenes in the Cotswolds and is often said to have inspired fantasy imagery associated with Tolkien.
The town is filled with traditional honey-coloured stone buildings, old inns, narrow lanes, and independent shops, all contributing to its timeless atmosphere. Early mornings in Stow-on-the-Wold are especially peaceful before visitors arrive and the streets begin to fill.
