Hey everyone, welcome to another episode of Our Poor Decisions. And shout out to everyone who
follows our Instagram for voting yes to a new unboxing video. Pops, I know you don't really
like these videos, but I think they're easy to do and people seem to really love them.
All right, and I guess we got 300 votes for yes, one vote no. Yes, one vote no. Is that me?
Do you want to get started? Let's do it. All right, so these are boxes from the last three
ACRA auctions that we participated in. One was the December live auction, and then there were
two online auctions. And we just got the shipment yesterday. We're in January, the temperature's
perfect for shipping right now. So yeah, let's get started. It's your favorite time of the year. I
know, it is my favorite time of year. And I feel like you told me that you had some really good
deals in here. I do have some good deals, and then we'll talk about that. And I also have
several wines that I bought specifically for making episodes. So yeah, that's going to be
part of the fun of opening this. All right, well, I'm going to start with the two that are open
here. I think we know what's in here. Actually, this is really cool. All right, so let's start
with it. This is a mixed case. One of the really cool wines that I got here is from BV. BV is one
of those wineries that I want to do a video on of the older vintages, not the BV that has been
since 2010. I think we got four bottles in 1995. I got another four bottles of 1994,
and I think there's some other vintages here too. We'll get to that. I got a couple of
bottles of Scarecrow. I have soft spots for Scarecrow. No way. Yeah, well, you know what?
It's a good one. So if I get a decent deal, this is 2015, should be a great vintage.
Oh, wow. Okay, so here's a bottle of wine that I've never had before, and I bought this
specifically because I wanted to do an episode on this. It's a Washington wine. I have not had it.
Would love to compare it to, say, Calceta Creek, and then I think I have a 2020 here. Yep,
this is a 2020. So it'll be a fun video. All right, box number two.
Yeah, so I got some old favorites here. So this is a really good bottle of wine that I've had a
and the Pichon Longville, Comtesse de Lalande. So there's the Comtesse and the Baron.
This is the Comtesse 2000, and I've had it before. This is supposed to be a very,
very good bottle of wine, but there's another vintage that I bought on auction. We're going
to get back to that later on, which I think is fantastic or so I've heard. I've not had it,
so I bought a whole case of it. This is more of the 2000. Got six bottles of that and then six
bottles of the 2005 Baron. All right, let's take this one that's already opened. Okay,
and then this was one of our sneak peeks. That's right. So this is one of our sneak peeks.
So here we have another six-pack of two different wines. The first one is the 2000
Guerlain Rose. This is a really a Saint-Julien that I think is underappreciated. These wines age
really well in my opinion. Okay. I had a bottle of this in our last Las Vegas trip,
and it was fantastic. Yeah. Le Veil Poivre 1996. I don't know much about this wine.
This was one of those that I just wanted to bid on. If there's anyone out there who knows
much about it, let us know. Box number four. All right, where do you want to go? You want to start
in front of me? Sure, let's do it. All right. So this is a wine that was recommended by Mark.
Remember our wine cellar tours? And we did the cellar tour from Mark. This is Checkerboard,
and it's an older vintage. So it's 2014. Oh, it's dusty. It is. Aurora Vineyard. Looks like it's
been part of just this box all along. I am really excited to try one of the wines that
Mark recommended. I figure 2014 should be ready to be consumed now. So I got this one,
and I'm going to compare it to another wine that he recommended. Okay. These might be big
bottles, right? Yeah, these look like magnums. All right. Bottle number 38. Oh, Dakota Shy.
This was the brand that Mark mentioned, and then I bought to compare it to Checkerboard.
So this is a 2014. That's the one you just were mentioning? That was the one that I
just mentioned. Oh, wow. So we just kind of got lucky there. Got lucky. So this is Dakota Shy,
2014 Social Currency. So I don't know what happened with Dakota Shy in the last few years,
but 2014 is supposed to be good. One of their first vintages of Social Currency.
And here's the thing. Nobody else bid on it. You got a pretty good deal? Yeah, I thought I got a
good deal, but I don't know if I got a good deal because the wine is really good or because I
got a good deal because I don't know. Maybe I didn't get a good deal. This looks like another
big bottle. It does, doesn't it? Oh, it's not a big bottle. I don't know why. That was disappointing.
No, it wasn't actually. You know, I bought a single bottle of 1995 Chateau Latour.
I can't actually remember why I bought it now.
Okay, don't tell the viewers that. All right, next box. Yeah, let's do it.
I have never had... I know that the viewers can see what this is. I've never had the Maiden.
So this is the second wine of Harlan Estate, right? And a lot of times I think that the second
wines are just not very good deals. So I decided against my own intuition. I decided that I was
going to buy a couple of second wines from Harlan. Give them a try. So I bought 2014 and 2018.
How many bottles? There are only three in here, right?
Are you opening them up? Well, I can. Want to pop them open?
Sure. See what's in there? Yeah, so they come in with beautiful, beautiful packaging, beautiful
paper. Well, we're going to give it a shot. I don't know if they're any good value or not.
Here's a bottle of Harlan. You know, maybe I should... Like, I hate how Acura puts the stickers
on these boxes. Like, that just drives me absolutely bonkers because they're hard to
get off, right? Why do you have to make me do all this work to get your stickers off?
Like, I know where it's coming from. The diva has spoken.
I'm really excited about 2010, by the way. I've never had the Harlem 2010.
2010 was kind of a tannic-y vintage for Napa and they took a long time to really come around.
But I think 10 is drinking beautifully. So I'm excited about this.
All right, next box. Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah. So I ended up buying a case of Opryon 2001. You know,
we just talked about some of the big vintages, but there are some values to be had and there's
a lot of other good wines out there from not so stellar vintages. The 2001 Opryon, I have not had,
but I got a pretty decent deal on it. I'm super excited to see if this is a wine that,
you know, I generally think the 2001 is a tricky vintage because it came after 2000.
So how could you live up to that hype, right? Like, how can you live up to that?
All right, here's a box. Let's get it going. It looks like a mixed bag. Okay. So this is a mix.
All right. So this is interesting. A little bit more Opryon 1995. I got three bottles of that.
A lot of you know that I drink Brankantanac pretty regularly. It's one of my go-to bottles.
I think it's a good value. This is a 2000. Oh, okay. So here's a bottle I bought specifically
because I want to do an episode on. This is a bottle of 1994 Opus 1. And I want to do an
episode on Opus 1. Hot or not? Yeah, that's great. So I've got two
bottles in the 1994, just in case one of them is bad. And then I wanted to do an episode on
Washington wines. So I wanted to see how the Quilceta Creeks have aged. This is still like
relatively early in their history, right? I'm dying to see what they're like almost 30 years later.
All right. So remember what I said about. All right. So I'm pretty sure this is not what I
ordered. Oh, I'm pretty sure that I did not order 1997 Beringer Napa Valley. Okay. Let me
double check. Oh gosh, I'm getting a break. A few moments later. So what just happened?
Okay. So I just went back and went through my, went through my documentation and remember what
I talked to you about? We wanted to do a video on BV. Yeah. So I thought I bought a case of 1997
BV because 1997 was a great vintage for Napa. It was a great vintage for BV. And Acker,
you sent me a case of Beringer, which I did not order. Pain in the neck, because now you got to
send this back and then you got to send the BV, you know, it's always a pain in the neck.
All right. Here's the box. Let's hope that this is actually the right line in here.
And the box, as you saw, was actually labeled with my name on it. It was delivered. So it's
not like they, it's not like I got somebody else's wine. It just, it was picked the wrong one. You
know? All right. I got five bottles of this. This is 1998 Chateau Opryon. Just different, you know,
Opryon. I like Opryon. So what's interesting about 1988 for Opryon, and I know this is maybe
more than you want to know, but one of the most legendary bottles of wine from Bordeaux is 1989
of Opryon. Yeah. And we still need to get that bottle. We still need to get a bottle of that.
But one of the bottles that I love more than anything is what? The 1990 Opryon. And so my
thinking here is that 1988 maybe just got lost in the shuffle. So we'll see.
Okay. So remember, bone cut the neck. Great everyday wine. Love that wine. 2015 should be
a good year. I like that. And then another bottle of Scarecrow, 2012. I think it's well-established
that I like Scarecrow. So Bea, I didn't tell you. So these are all the wines that we won,
right? Oh, actually. Yeah. And won in quotation mark. These are all the wines that nobody else
wanted to pay more for. Yeah. Okay. You know that I lost a bunch? What was probably the one
you were most upset about losing? The McDonald. Was it one bottle? No, it was six different
vintages. And somebody came like five minutes before the auction closed out, outbid me,
and then I was at dinner. So I didn't get notified until I got back after dinner,
lost all the bids. So I didn't get a single bottle of McDonald. I was upset about that.
But that's a good strategy if you want to do like a last minute win, wait until the five minutes
before. Now the way that Acker does, and I think most other wineries do it, in the old days,
it used to be a mad scramble to the finish line. But now if you put a winning bid in like right
before, it automatically reset for 10 or 15 minutes so that people have time to react.
And every time there's a winning bid, it resets another 10 or 15 minutes.
The problem was I was at dinner. Yeah.
And the other thing you can do to avoid that here is just to pre-program to say,
hey, I put in a bid for $300, but if somebody bids $325, I automatically will have a $325,
a $350 bid or something like that. It's my own fault. Okay. Last of the wines that I really do
like. I mean, not to say that's the last of the wines that I do like, but I'm scared for them.
And they're all the same. Well, that was a $16. This was a $19. There's a $21 and a $15.
The two on the bottom here actually are both the 2000 Rue de la Rose. Remember I talked about how
we went to the restaurant and it was really delicious? Yeah. Well, I found it at the auction.
They had six bottles of the regular bottle and 12 bottles of the magnums. And so I was like,
what the hell? Why not buy them? Yeah. So now I have more 2000 Rue de la Rose than we can finish
in a long time. Wow. So I'm pretty happy about that. I'm excited about that. So I think when
you find wines that are drinking exceptionally well, and they're not one of those wines that
everybody feel like they have to have, I get pretty excited about that. I think that was a
great value buy. I think I paid about $250 per bottle after the 25% for the magnums and about
$120 for the regular bottle, which I consider for a 2000 Rue de la Rose. I think that's a fantastic
deal. So I'm super happy. Now this one was more expensive and I don't know if this was a good
deal or not. This was a wine that's almost trading for 1996 at first growth level. This
is 1996 Pichon Lalonde. And evidently this is one of their best wines. And I have never had it,
but the more I read about it, the more I got interested in it. This might be a bust,
but this was not at all inexpensive. This was an expensive bottle of, this was an expensive case,
1996 Pichon. I'm super excited to try that wine. Let's take a look at what these magnums look like.
These are beautiful cases, by the way, when you open them. And I think the magnums are just special.
This absolutely pristine bottles. Yeah, they are. They've been stored in the wooden crates
or the wooden cases. So there's a part of collecting that's about the aesthetics too.
And I love the, I love the wooden boxes and the wines that are in there. I think Bordeaux does it
right. Yeah, it's pretty crazy. Well, that's it. Well, thanks everyone for watching. Thank you
for watching and then comment below what wine are you most excited about in this haul? Yeah,
and what wines you want us to make episodes about. And don't forget to follow us on Instagram. It's
