British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is insisting he will carry on as Prime Minister,
this despite his Labour Party suffering disastrous local election losses.
Let me be clear, these are really tough results. I'm not going to sugar coat it.
And we have lost brilliant Labour representatives, people who put so much into their communities,
so much into our party and our movement. And the voters have sent a message about the pace of
change, how they want their lives improved. I was elected to meet those challenges and I'm
not going to walk away from those challenges and plunge the country into chaos.
But I think overall what's happened is a truly historic shift in British politics.
We've been so used to thinking about politics in terms of left and right,
and yet what reform are able to do is to win in areas that have always been conservative,
but equally we're proving in a big way we can win in areas
that Labour have dominated, frankly, since the end of World War One.
Nigel Farage's reform UK made gains across the country, with hundreds of Labour councillors
being voted out, the results heaping pressure on the Prime Minister to step down. Farage vowed
the best is yet to come for his party. Starmer's party faces further heavy losses as vote counting
continues throughout today. In Wales, Labour is expected to lose the national vote for the first
time in more than a century. While the elections focus on local and regional races, opponents
viewed the vote as a referendum on Starmer's leadership. The Prime Minister faces criticism
over economic stagnation, strained public services, alleged two-tier policing, rising costs
of living and free speech concerns. Some Parliament members are urging Starmer to set out a timetable
for his departure.
