Master Woodcarving: Crafting a Pair of Japanese Guardian Lions for Temple Architecture
This video showcases the traditional process of carving a pair of Shishi (Japanese Guardian Lions) from a solid block of Zelkova (Keyaki) wood. These carvings were specifically created as ornaments to decorate structures used in traditional Japanese festivals.
Witness the complete mastery of the craft as I use various types of Japanese chisels (Nomi) and carving tools (Chokokuto) to refine every detail—from the paw pads and flowing mane to the powerful facial expressions.
[The Significance of "Shishi" in Japanese Culture]
The Shishi (often referred to as "lion-dogs" in the West) is a mythical creature that originated in ancient China before being introduced to Japan. As a powerful symbol of protection, it is one of the most iconic motifs in traditional Japanese woodcarving and is widely depicted in many other artistic fields beyond wood sculpture.
Guardians of Sacred Spaces: Shishi statues are commonly placed at the entrances of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. They are believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the sanctity of the grounds.
The Concept of "A-un": Shishi are typically created as a pair. The one with its mouth open is called "A-gyo," and the one with its mouth closed is "Un-gyo."
Architectural Art & Spiritual Protection: Beyond free-standing statues, Shishi are frequently carved directly into architectural elements such as beams and pillars to provide spiritual protection to the structure.
★ A Tip for Travelers:
When you visit temples, shrines, or see festival floats (Yatai/Dashi) in Japan, please take a close look—you will find these magnificent Shishi woodcarvings guarding the structures!
