Most actors are careful in public. Leonardo DiCaprio makes it feel like he's figuring
things out as they're happening. Leo has been snubbed at the Oscars at least five times,
so when he finally won he couldn't resist sneaking in a joke while they were engraving
his name.
You can be a grown man, wildly famous with hundreds of millions in the bank, and still
get completely undone by a simple fart joke. And yeah, it only went further downhill from
there. With his face already living a second life as meme material, Conan put him on the
spot at the Oscars to come up with a new one, and he didn't disappoint.
While doing press for his movie won battle after another, Leonardo DiCaprio took it upon
himself to answer a question that was meant for his co-star. Leo was a little too locked
into the moment and completely missed the fact that Lady Gaga was called to go on stage.
chair, and his reaction was absolutely priceless.
At the Oscars, Ellen literally had to pause everything the second she spotted Leo in the
crowd. At least she knows her audience. Out of all the fans who would have done anything
to recreate the iconic Titanic scene with Leo, the person who got that moment was Jonah
Hill? He actually looked surprisingly into it, almost more passionate than the original
scene with Kate Winslet. If you want to hit on Leo, you'll probably have to put in effort
to impress him. And that's exactly what this journalist did.
You know you're incredibly famous when a man across the world in Russia, who happens to
look just like you, gets a reality TV deal to recreate your most famous movie scenes.
Leonardo DiCaprio started telling a story about one of the most traumatic experiences
of his life, and it was met with laughter. But leave it to Leo to turn it into a full
comedy bit, perfectly recreating the scene by playing three characters at once.
I was screaming at the top of my lungs, saying, what the hell is going on here? And people
just kind of looked back at me, and the stewardess came out and said, we seem to have a slight
problem here. And the Russian guy finally said, what is the problem? And I said, well,
we lost one of our engines. He goes, how many engines did we have? Well, we had two. Now
we have one. He proceeded to say, that is not good.
His Russian impression is insanely good. Leo didn't exactly clock out when it came to pranking
Jonah Hill. It followed him off set, too. Leo couldn't find the journalist to save his
life. The filming of Titanic involved some brutal scenes, and since there weren't as
many advanced visual effects at the time, it was often a high-stress set for the cast
and crew. But that didn't stop Leo from lightening the mood behind the scenes. An interviewer
really fumbled the question they chose to ask here. Despite being one of the greatest
actors of all time, Joaquin Phoenix and many other stars often ended up getting roles only
after Leonardo DiCaprio rejected them.
When I started acting again, and going to auditions, I'd always get to the final callback.
And there would always be two other guys that I was up against. And we'd always lose to
this one kid. But every casting director would whisper in my ear, it's Leonardo. It's Leonardo.
Talk shows usually come with strict audience instructions. But the second Leo walks in,
all of that basically gets ignored. Every celebrity has a Jack Nicholson impression,
and Leo is no exception. At Cannes, long-standing ovations are basically the norm. But nobody
really talks about how awkward it is having a massive camera shoved right in your face
the entire time.
One of the biggest ongoing wait-a-second moments from any movie is the ending of Titanic, where
everyone has debated why Jack couldn't just fit on the board with Rose. And Leo eventually
got asked about it years later. Jonah Hill experienced Leo's method acting on the set
of Wolf of Wall Street, and it wasn't exactly working in his favor. But then he decided
to flip it, using Leo's over-dedication against him and forcing him to adapt to the scene
Edward Norton made a pretty savage joke about Leonardo DiCaprio during The Tonight Show
with Jimmy Falun. But that wasn't the only comment he made about Leo.
And honestly, it kinda checks out. He's basically the only person in history to end up in a
on the top of the cage and the Great White leapt out and tried to bite it and it went
into the cage with me and half of its body was in and out and I flattened down at the
bottom and it was this far away and it chomped a few times but I survived it.
Every celebrity has that one moment when they realize they're actually famous. When a fan
recognizes them in public and things get a little unhinged. And Leo has his own story
This young girl came up to me with this real wild look in her eyes and clutched my leg
and dug into my leg with all her might and I looked down at her and it was the most surreal
thing in the world because it wasn't really about me or anything it wasn't I was trying
to communicate I was saying it's okay you can stand up I'll talk to you we'll have a
conversation and he was like no. You know? And that's when I realized that things were
Leonardo DiCaprio always felt he was going to get the role in Titanic, but in reality
he almost didn't, as James Cameron initially found him a bit arrogant during their first
meeting.
So Leo came in of course charmed everybody and I said okay so we'll just go in the next
room we'll run some lines and I'll video it and he said you mean I'm reading I said yeah
he said oh I don't read I said well I shook his hand I said well thanks for coming by
he said wait wait wait you mean if I don't read I don't get the part just like that and
I said oh yeah come on.
But James and the entire casting team completely changed their minds once they saw him act.
You're gonna read or you're not gonna get the part. Oh okay every ounce of his entire
being is just so negative right up until I said action and then he turned into Jack and
Kate just lit up and they went into this whole thing and he played the scene dark clouds
had opened up and a ray of sun came down and lit up Jack. I'm like all right he's the
guy.
If Leo gave you a compliment like this you've basically won at acting.
The great Jonah Hill. The great Jonah Hill. An incredible improvisational actor. You said
in fact as good as you've seen. Some of the probably the best probably the best improvisational
actor I've ever worked with.
