Would You Live in a House Supported by One Column? | Set Houses with One Pillar
Designed by Buero Wagner, Set Houses with One Pillar in Berg, Germany reimagines a typical suburban plot by replacing a single aging home with two compact dwellings that increase density while preserving openness. The project is defined by a radical structural concept—each house is organized around a single central column that enables a fully open ground floor, where living, dining, and kitchen spaces flow seamlessly without internal walls. This column also integrates functional elements, merging structure and furniture into one cohesive system. Combining a solid concrete base with a warm timber upper structure and a charred wood exterior, the design balances durability, material honesty, and spatial clarity, offering a thoughtful model for sustainable and efficient residential living.
