These are three types of foods to avoid so you don't die of a heart attack.
My name is Dr. Kevin Ham. I'm a family doc
from Vancouver, Canada. It really looks to reverse and cure
heart disease and other metabolic disease like high blood pressure,
diabetes, and so forth. So what what are the top three foods
not to eat? We often ask people in the emergency room
when they have chest pain, we ask them what's the last thing that you ate?
And if they say fried chicken, we think there's 80% plus chance that
they're having a heart attack. So what is it about fried chicken that
makes people potentially have a heart attack?
One of my friends, she was just 49 years old
and she's like, I'm eating healthy, but she had two or three major clogged
vessels and she was having a heart attack. She got a stent
and I asked her, what did you have before you had your heart attack? Basically,
she had a lot of fries and a burger.
What is it about these foods? These are fried foods.
These are heated oils. These heated oils are really bad. Why?
When you heat oils, they oxidize. It's like, what's oxidation, right? It's
like nails becoming rusty. That's oxidation.
And so this heated oil, the oil becomes oxidized and when it goes into
your blood, it oxidizes the cholesterol in your blood. It
oxidizes the, you know, fats and the proteins and
cause damage and this creates plaque. And over a long period of time,
typically like 10 years plus, 20 years, 30 years, 40 years,
people start to get buildup of that plaque in their blood vessels.
And when it is around 70% or more, people start to get symptoms.
Shortness of breath, tiredness, sometimes chest pain,
and then heart attacks, strokes. Those are the end effects. So,
heated oils. A hundred years ago, there were no heated vegetable oils. A
company called Procter & Gamble that makes,
you know, the laundry detergent and your toothpaste,
they invented Crisco, crystallized cottonseed oil.
And then from that point on, all these vegetable oils
that are heart healthy were introduced. People replaced the saturated fat like
ghee and beef tallow. These desaturated fats, they don't
oxidize as much. Yeah, cholesterol's high, but the
cholesterol's not oxidized as much. You know that fish oils are
very sensitive to heat and therefore you have to put them in the refrigerator
because if you heat fish oils, the extreme
oxidation. So, that's why you consume fish oils cold,
if they're like supplement typically. So, this oxidation
is very dangerous, but it takes decades. So, it's a very slow, insidious
process. The second group of foods that you
should not eat, anything with a lot of added sugar. We
call them refined sugar, right? It's not natural to the food.
If you eat a fruit, naturally it has fructose,
the kind of sugar. If you eat honey, it has
natural sugar, fructose and glucose. But most of the time, a lot of foods have
cane sugars added. Think about proteins and
fats that have sugar on them. They call it glycation.
So, think about a juice that spills on your computer keyboard.
What happens to your keys? They become really sticky.
But this is happening in our bodies when we have too much sugar
in our foods. Pop is high fructose corn syrup. It's different than fruit because
fruit has fiber. Coca-Cola doesn't have any fiber. Refined
sugar is the second big thing and this is what they measure in
diabetes. And you know that in diabetes, their
blood vessels become problematic. Number one cause of
blindness, number one cause of amputations,
high reason for heart attacks, right? The chances are
and even cancer. So, that's the number two big category.
If you just made a change, and this is what I didn't understand before,
some Korean six-year-old ladies would say that they have diabetes and high
blood pressure. And I thought, oh, they must be eating
McDonald's and the western diet. No, they weren't. They were eating Korean food.
And that really confused me until I realized
that white flour and white rice are refined sugars. Why? Because you
eliminate the outer covering called bran, which is fiber. And without
that fiber, your glucose rises very high and that
causes the sugar to go on to these proteins, which
is measured for diabetes called hemoglobin A1c. It's a measure
and it's one of the best predictors of how long you'll live
and your health span. How much you will suffer if you live a long time.
So, the recommended hemoglobin A1c is 5.0 if you want to live till
in your 90s or 100s. But diabetes starts from 6.0 and on.
These numbers may not mean much, but they're a measure
that the sugars are bad. So, if you just replace
the white flour with whole grain, you would delay the onset of these
metabolic diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes. And then
the third one I would say is too much
saturated fat. Eating animals and eating seafood is not bad in itself
if you're healthy. But once you have heart disease, the
beginnings of it, when you eat too much, you will keep on
adding to that over time, over decades. And that's why people have
average age 61 of heart attacks, 71 in women.
And so, keeping your saturated fat consumption
reasonable. You don't have to eliminate it like I have
because I want to reverse my disease. You want to
make sure that you're not progressing at all in heart disease.
So, that's my thing. Number one, no heated oils.
Look at the ingredient list. Make sure there's no oils. Number two,
don't add sugars to your food. And then number three is reduce
saturated fats. You know, two times a week, three times a week.
Whatever is right for you based on your age, whether you're growing or whether
you're not growing. And I think if you do those three
things, you could extend your life 10-20 years
and also have quality of life for another 10-20 years.
So, I hope you think about this every time you put something into your
mouth and you look at the ingredient list.
